My children eating their fruits and vegetables is extremely important to me. I have a 7-year-old step-daughter and a 2-year-old that have a MAJOR sweet tooth, and I honestly try everything I can get to get them away from the junk. I do not buy chips, coke or candy unless we have something going on. We keep carrots, grapes, apples, oranges, cucumbers and things like that for snacks.
My sister-n-law has the same issue with her 3 1/2-year-old son, I swear they try the junk once and they are hooked. My 2-year-old will eat her fruits and veggies but cry’s for her “nandy”, Sometimes my 7-year-old will say she is not hungry because we are having a nice healthy dinner but will turn around and ask if we have corn-dog or something junky. I try, but nothing seems to work with her, she did not come to live with us until she was 4, and I am a firm believer that children learn their eating habits at a young age.
My 3 1/2-year-old nephew refuses to eat his vegetables, oh wait I take that back he will eat corn but other than that no way he will not have it. So my sister-n-law and I decided to give Copy-Kids a try.
What are Copy-Kids? It is a media company producing video that which came out in January of 2012 and is aimed to help encourage positive eating habits in young children, by them watching other children and copying what they see. If they see children on TV eating vegetables and having fun, maybe they will want to copy that behavior. The DVD has 12 x 7 minute chapters that are based on the vegetable type such as bell pepper, bananas, carrots, avocado, apples, blueberries’, and so on. The video has children as young as 9 months and as old as 4 years and has a discussion about healthy eating habits with Dr. Jay Gordon and some awesome outtakes.
Anytime I do a review, I provide my honest feedback and that being, when the video first started to play I truly did not know what to think. I guess I was expecting something very different you know music fun, something my 2-year-old would dance around to. I do not know what I was expecting, however THE KIDS LOVED IT! My 2-year-old laughed and wanted a cucumber, I have never heard her say the word but she knows it now.
My sister-in-law has seen a huge difference in her son, HE EATS HIS VEGGIES! He actually asks what veggies they will be having for dinner, she is very glad the video included so many different types because he request what he watched on the video lol. They stopped by tonight to borrow the funny veggie DVD, IT IS A HIT! So regardless of what my first impression was, it works and the children love it and that is what is important, mom was wrong and I will gladly admit that. My 2-year-old daughter, who I thought would not want anything to do with it loved it. Not sure what Dr. Jay Gordon did but it worked and we send a HUGE thank you to Copy Kids, our children love their veggies.
The video is non-scripted, shows children in eating veggies and fruits in a normal environment, no music, no singing about the veggie guy in the costume, just normal kids eating healthy foods, some show off a bit and really makes the video cute. The non-scripted video really grabs the children’s attention and makes them want to join in the fun, maybe it is because it shows real children having real fun. Children know that at dinner time there will be no dancing broccoli in the kitchen singing and dancing and if there was, mom would make him leave until after dinner. So the real approach works best, I am a believer in that now, I have witnessed it with all my children even my 7-year-old wanted a bell pepper. My 7-year-old daughter will watch the video with the other children and is now eating her veggies also, every night she actually says they are good!
