Founded in 1999, your foundation where you live is what shapes you in your life and Diono was shaped in Seattle, in one of the worlds leading innovating cities in the entire world! In 2002 Diono debuted the Diono Mighty-Tite at JPMA, which later went to win in 2002 for the Most Innovative Product award from Mother & Baby.
While not only winning an award or debuting their products, word soon spread to other counties across the ocean and soon Diono made its first ever overseas wholesale company in Staffordshire, England. Another great market introduction from Diono in 2002 was their Super Mat, as many parents know and have suffered from the hands of car seats ruining leather seats or fabric seats in your vehicle, the Super Mat was made to help eliminate the suffering of tears. The Diono Radian Convertible Car Seat was introduced in 2005 as another great invention made from Diono, as the first ever steel reinforced compact folding car seat, that helps make storage and travel easier for you! Years go by and in 2007 Diono thought why not keep making first ever products? Why stop there? So the Diono Monterey Expandable Booster Car Seat was made, the very first ever height and width adjustable booster car seat to grow with your child. How cool is that?
More years go by and from the years 2008-2011 Diono has won several prestigious awards and several honors from 9 well known websites! As the years pass Diono kept making top of the brands with many magazine companies and consumer and product services, let alone top company in Seattle! Diono currently has 100 original and thoughtful ideas in 54 countries around the world, while their offices stay close to home in the USA, UK, CA, France, Germany, Hong Kong and China!
Diono was so kind to allow us to review the greatest car seat of all time!! The Diono Radian rXT! A very well known and loved convertible car seat many parents love! Now many parents don’t know the real meaning behind a “convertible car seat” did you know? A convertible car seat in this case with the Radian rXT is that it is able to convert from a rear-facing, forward-facing, to a high-back booster! Many parents, when they hear about convertible they assume a transforming car seat, which would be a harnessed booster that converts to a high-back booster, to a backless booster, or from a high-back to a backless booster which is not the case. Let alone more parents think that a convertible can also mean Rear-facing and forward-facing with a forward-facing car seat. That is FALSE! Please look at the appropriate car seat age and do your research! This is why the Diono Radian rXT is your only car seat you’ll ever need! It can accommodate children from 5-120 lbs and up to 57 inches! Now that is an All-In-One car seat!
An All-In-One car seat is a car seat that can grow with your child from birth all the way till they no longer need a car seat. The Diono Radian rXT can accommodate children 5-45 lbs or up to 44 inches rear-facing, now that is a huge span as most rear-facing car seats cannot rear-face that long. While using the Radian rXT forward facing it can accommodate children 20-80 lbs or up to 57″. Parents PLEASE I cannot express how many parents forward-face their 20 lb baby (equivalent to 1 years old), please do not forward-face your 20 lb baby! Infants who are forward-facing are 75% likely to be severely hurt or death in infants younger than 2 years old, where I am at it is now illegal to forward-face an infant under 2, unless they have outgrown the maximum height or weight limit, which of course always keep 1 inch from the top of the car seat before transitioning. While you child may seem like they are uncomfortable they can always position their legs to a position that’s most comfortable for them, so please don’t forward-face because they may seem uncomfortable. This is why the Diono Radian rXT is the safest car seat.
The Radian rXT is many great features and features that definitely will be needing to look into. I love that the Radian can be used for my child’s lifetime or until the car seat expires, which the Diono Radian rXT has a lifespan of 10 years! Of course because it is all-in-one car seat, most car seats only have a span of 6-8 years depending on the company. I also love that Diono has included a infant insert that can grow with your child from birth for extra padding. The Radian also has super extra padded harness covers that I love and hate. I love the added pad covers as it’ll give extra comfort over the neck and top shoulder are at. My concern is that it is super hard to tighten the harness as you have to adjust the cover down while tightening the harness. Now as your child outgrows the car seat to roughly 65 lbs you will need to change the harness covers to a more thinner type, why I am not sure but hey at least they included that with the car seat. Moving onto the harness unfortunately Diono has yet to change their harness adjusters. I would love for them to become a no re-thread harness!
Right now you have to manually adjust the harness which can be a pain in the butt, but one factor that I love is that you can change it while the car seat is installed into the car! If you have a smaller car it may be more of a workout but I love that ability! Another factor is that the headrest is not automatically adjustable and I still have some confusion and frustration with the headrest, it is so simple but confusing. But I love that you can adjust it to the height of your child, now Diono recommends not using the headrest support until your child reaches the 3rd slot in the harness level, so always use the infant insert until they reach that stage. I personally still get confused and feel like the infant insert may be a bit to bulky to use, but of course as any parent you continue learning about a new car seat.
While using the Radian at the rear-facing stage you are required to used the rear-facing base, now the base is super easy to add one and you must lock it once it’s installed onto the bottom portion of the car seat. Also while rear-facing you cannot adjust the car seat to a angle it stays in a certain angle, which I personally hate as the Radian rXT is known for 3 car seats across a sedan, having no angle adjuster was a pain, as you cannot sit comfortably with the seat so forward, I do know they have it as an accessory which I would love for them to include with the car seat. The Super Latch makes for an easy installation with those new and improved latch clips (the button ones.) Now you can always install the Radian with the vehicle seat belt or lap belt, if your car has an automatic tightening seat belt you just tighten it as much as you can and check for tightness afterwards, now if the car does not have an automatic tightness you will need to use the locking clip. The locking clip is a clip located usually underneath all the car seats that is shaped like a sideways H.
When using the locking clip, it must be used on the side where the seat belt clips on about an 1 inch from the metal buckle piece (piece the slides into the bottom half,) Overall using the Radian as a rear-facing car seat has its pros and cons, all of which can be fixed or stay the same. Remember to always test the car seats snugness, it must not move more than 1 inch forward, back, side to side. Another great feature that I love about using the Radian is the easiness to use the latch or seatbelt going through the rear or forward facing belt path! Super easy to stick your hand in their path with no real difficult frustrations or no way to get the belts tangled up.
Using the Radian as a forward-facing is super easy as the rear-facing way, but we remove the removable infant base while forward facing your little one. Now you can adjust the built in adjustable base for children weighing 25 lbs and over to the down position, any child weighing less than 25 lbs and meets the minimum requirements must have it up. Diono also made a safe stop belt that is detachable from the back of the car seat and is added to where the harness connects, to help ensure maximum safety in a car crash. When your child reaches the weight of 65 lbs you must change out the harness covers to the second set Diono provided in the box. Why? I am not sure, but I personally like the second set of harness straps rather than the first ones meant for children under 65 lbs.
Adjusting the head rest rear-facing or forward-facing is a bit of a struggle if you cannot understand the manual. In the manual it specifies you must (easier) to adjust the head rest while installed or leaned against something sturdy to adjust. Now while the car seat is “secured” you have to angle the head rest section and lift up from the bottom to adjust the head rest higher, or to lower it down push down from the back top part of the headrest. Of course it will take time to see how it works for you. So I would love for Diono to make a no re-thread harness and head rest section to make the Radian rXT the BEST car seat there is out there!
Using the Latch System Guides rear-facing must no exceed 35 lbs rear-facing ONLY, when using the latch system and the top tether weight must not exceed 35 lbs. Forward-facing with only the Latch System and or with the Top Tether, child must not exceed 40 lbs. Diono is one of the few companies that have upgraded their latch systems to the easy 1 button release latch versus the original clip, which leave many parents frustrated. Storage for both the Top Tether and Latch Systems are located in the backside of the car seat.
Overall I really like the Diono Radian rXT all-in-one forever car seat. I would love for Diono to fix those minor problems in their later productions to ease the stress of parents all around the world! I believe if you have a Diono Radian rXT, it should be used for a bigger Van/SUV type vehicle, and a small/medium sedan will take room, unless of course you buy the height adjuster that adds an extra 4 inches of room! You can follow Diono on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Pinterest, and YouTube.
We used a 2016 Honda Accord (not sure the model either LX or EX) for this review.
