Are you familiar with Novica? Novica initially launched their site in 1999, but has just recently revamped things to make it faster, more stylish, and easier to navigate.
Novica – Support Artisans This Holiday Season #Gift Guide
With most products being mass produced these days, it is refreshing to find a site where artisans around the world can display their goods to the general public, yet still retain their individuality and specialty. And, since Novica practices fair trade, none of the artists are charged any fees for listing their items on the Novica website, basically cutting out the middleman, and adding value to those artisans and customers alike.
Thank you Novica for providing me with two sculptures for the purpose of this review.
The first wood sculpture is the Hand Carved Heart Sculpture, ‘Story of Love’. This sculpture weighs only 0.5 pounds and stands 7.75″ H x 7.75″ W x 1.4″ D. It is lovingly made of Suar wood and signed by the artist. A feature I appreciate with theses sculptures is that the wood grain and the colors can vary slightly. This item was created by Eka in Indonesia.
The second wood sculpture is the Romantic Wood Sculpture, ‘A Heart Shared by Two’. This sculpture also weighs 0.5 pounds and measures 7.5″ H x 5″ W x 2″ D. It is also made from Suar wood. This item was created by Made Wirata in Indonesia. Both of these sculptures remind me of the love and affection my husband and I shared together.
Novica’s mantra is to spread happiness. They do this by their commitment to connect, empower and preserve. Novica connects artisans, many of whom do not have the means to connect to the international market a chance to do so with local experts in every region. Thus, allowing the artisans to reach customers on a global scale. The exciting news is that along with each item that is listed on the site, a small section is devoted to the individual artist explaining the creation of the item itself.
As part of the Novica’s mantra, empowerment is important. Prior to listing an item on the site, all artisan products must submit to a certification process by Novica. This ensures that all handmade products are of 100% premium quality. However, following this certification process, Novica relinquishes all power over the items being sold by the individual artisan. Each artisan has the power to raise prices, lower prices and even place their items on sale. Novica even offers a 0% interest loans to those artisans who want to expand their businesses to bring in more income. Bottom line – Novica gives you a choice of supporting artisans from around the world by purchasing their quality products, or purchasing a mass produced item someplace else of lesser quality.
Novica spreads their happiness through preservation. Novica has placed teams in every region to find time honored traditional works of art that are unique. It is these works of art that offer originality and quality of workmanship that are listed through Novica. And just like an Art Appreciation course that I took in college where I learned a greater understanding of the Arts, Novica has a site to teach anyone about every artistic tradition through their Keepers Of The Arts page. Be sure to check this page out to learn about endangered traditions and how you can target your support.
