Relationship and Travel: Coping With a Spouse Who Travels

by Jenn

This post brought to you by Fruit of the Loom®. All opinions are 100% mine.

Relationship and travel don’t go in the same sentence well, unless the traveling is going to be done together.  Coping with a spouse who travels can turn a healthy relationship upside-down.  The first five years of my marriage my husband and I didn’t spend but one night apart, and that night wasn’t fun.  Now that my spouse travels more for work I have had to find ways to cope with my spouse traveling more, and even worse him missing important times in our lives.  Keeping our marriage alive and healthy is extremely important to both my husband and I, which is why I have tried to find ways to make the most of my husband being gone.

Now, I know there are people who’s spouse travels much more than Shawn, and I am thankful for the job he has, but the fact of the matter is I miss my husband when he is away.  I miss our talks at night, becasue at the end of the day he is more than just my husband, he is my very best friend.  God Bless our military families, who go without seeing their spouse for months, and months.  They truly serve right along side their spouse, and I thank every military family out there for their service.  I know it isn’t easy, I see what my family member and friends deal with on a daily basis, see evnets which are missed, and thank you from the bottom of my heart.

My husband has had jobs in the past where he would go into work at 5:00am, and not get home until 10:00pm, and it was harder on our relationship when he worked long hours day after day, than it is when he travels a little here and there for work.  Shawn recently left his job where he was working so many hours, becasue he started missing so much with the kids, and he it broke his heart when they stopped asking him to come to events at school.  I am thankful he quite, and the job he has now is not as demanding in terms of travel as some of his other jobs.  He does travel, but it is nothing like he used to.  When he does travel now I find myself looking for things to do to keep me from getting depressed.

Prepare yourself

It’s okay to be upset if your spouse is leaving.  Try to remember that it isn’t the end of the world, and focus on the fact they will return.  Hey, and sometimes being away from one another is good for your relationship.  Be sure to allow yourself time to prepare, and try to focus on the positive things it will bring.

Time together

Take some time out of your day, and do something you both enjoy together.  Take them to dinner and a movie, stay in for a dinner and a movie.  Whatever it is be sure ti’s something both of you will enjoy, and are able to spend some good quality time together.

Call them

It’s totally okay to contact your partner.  You should be thoughtful, but be sure to be thoughtful about why he is there, and the times that you call.

Do something

Don’t allow yourself to sit around and feel sorry for yourself.  Use the time to do something for yourself, or go see a friend who will cheer you up.

Plan

Plan something for everyday they are away.

Clean

When you start feeling like you want to cry, clean!  Turn on some upbeat music, and have fun.

Remember

Being away for your spouse is a good thing.  It’s true, absence does make the heart grow fonder, but it’s also time to focus on YOU!

Learn

You should be able to be away from your spouse, and be okay while he is away.

Get excited

You are home alone, get to watch whatever you want, and even eat in bed without hearing him complain.  Use this to do all those things that you love to do, that he hates that you do lol.  My husband hates that I will eat almonds in bed.  One of the first things I do when he is away, is grab a bag of almonds, and watch a chick flick in bed, lol.

Skype

Skype is great; it’s nice to see their face, and a great way to allow the kids to talk to their father.

Flirting

Keep your relationship strong, and flirt a little.  There is nothing wrong with flirting with your spouse while they are away, and it helps keep your relationship healthy.

Change Something

Whether you cut your hair, or get your nails done, do something that makes you feel good to be you.

Hang with the kids

Do something fun and special with the kids. Spending extra time with the kids is a great way to not only help them, but also help your relationship.

Hobby

Try new things, and look for a new hobby to take on.  This is not only great for while he is away, but it will make you feel better while he is home too.  Having hobbies can make you feel better, and gives you something to do to help pass the days.

Send something

Do something sweet. If you spouse is gone long enough to send something to them, why not send them a sweet “I love You Letter?”

Sleep

When you go to bed sleep on his side of the bed.  This always makes me feel better, I love sleeping on my husband side of the bed.  It might sound odd, but I like that his pillow smells like him.  Helps give me good dreams!

Wear His Shirt To Bed

I always wear my husband white t-shirts to bed, but only while he is away.  It’s the whole smell thing, it’s comforting.  You know the Fruit of the Loom® t-shirts!  They are my favorite to wear to bed when my husband is away.  Typically, I will put on a good movie, and lay in bed watching my chick flick until I pass out.

Think of Things That Make You Smile

Try to think about the good things, and don’t allow yourself to get caught up in the negative things.

We recently bought Shawn a package of the Fruit of the Loom® Sure Fit Crew Tees and a package of the Fruit of the Loom® Sure Fit Boxer Briefs.  Right now you can score each pack for $9.97, which is a great price.  Naturally, I had to ask him what he thought of the new Sure Fit Collection, and he told me, “I don’t know babe, I just put them on.  Will you ask me after work?”  WOW, gosh, I guess I forgot he is not like me.  I know in a matter of 5 minutes whether I like something I have on or not, but nope not him, and he says I am the difficult one.

Anyway, when he walked in the door at 4:30pm, and he made me wait another hour while he input his daily reading into the computer, and I know he took a litte longer on purpose.  Rather than asking him again, I went into the bedroom, got his shirts, and put one on. I decided to be a smart butt back, and put on a pair of his boxer briefs too, and walk into his office.  Do you know it took him a few minutes to even realize what I was doing!  GOSH! I had to actually say, “Dang babe these boxer briefs are the bomb.”  Then he looked at me, and told me to take off his boxer briefs, but mission accomplished.  Shawn laughed at me, followed me out of the office so he could poke fun, make sure I got out of his boxer briefs, and finally he answered my question.

So here is what I learned about the Fruit of the Loom™ Sure Fit Collection

I thought they were nice and comfy, and Shawn agreed, but let’s leave me out of this because I don’t really know what it’s like to be a guy.  I am only the wife who wears his shirts when she misses her husband and his boxer briefs when he blows me off to get his attention.

Fruit of the Loom® Sure Fit Crew Tees

Shawn loves his new Fruit of the Loom® Sure Fit Crew Tees, they are nice and soft, even after they have been washed thanks to the cotton blend that helps them shrink less and last longer.  Shawn actually said something about them shrinking less, and after three washes, they still look fabulous.   Shawn’s favorite thing about the shirt is the collar, which are designed to lay flat while you wear them, and they length of the shirts even after they were washed.

Fruit of the Loom® Sure Fit Boxer Briefs

Shawn has always been a boxer brief person, but this is his first time trying the Fruit of the Loom® brand.  After wearing them for a few days, it’s safe to say he is happy with them or several reasons – less shrinking means better comfort, durable fabric means they will last longer, soft so they are comfy, and his favorite is that the legs don’t ride up.  Which has to be totally uncomfortable, and I honestly didn’t ever stop to consider the fact that guys can have that issue too, but it was one of the things Shawn has said something about several times.

Rather than focusing on the negative side of your spouse being away, try your best to keep your head, and focus on the positive things and that they will be home.

The kids can also do something nice for dad, becasue I am sure it is hard for him to be away form hom too.  My husband and I will be leaving in only a few days, and the kids wanted to design dad a shirt for his vacation with mom.  I guess that is one of the perks of being dad, and getting to work all day.  The kids miss you and think of things they can do to show you they love you.  See I get it all day, and I love that my kids care so much about thier dad.  My youngest is daddy girl to the bone, if dad can do it so can she, and if she is going to miss someone first it’s my husband.  He is the apple of her eye, and I couldn’t be happier about it, becaseu he is an amazing man to look up to.  I also remember what it was like being a daddy’s girl, and seeing the two of them together often takes me back to when I was a child.  We grow up all to fast, so making things for dad means he will have something speical to hold on to forgver.

tshirt funBefore getting started Mattie had to try on all of dads new Fruit of the Loom® Sure Fit Crew Tees, and see which one was going to be perfect for her going away tshirt for her daddy.  Finally, after trying them all on once, and two of the three times, we had the grand winner.  It looked just like the first one she tried on, and I honestly don’t know if she knew if it was or not, but who cares as long as she found one.  She loves to wear her dads shirts to bed too, just like mom.

going away shirt for dadWe had fun making the shirt, Mattie did most of it, but Vayda tuned in once in a while.  I draw connect the dot’s sharks, and fish for Mattie and she did the rest.  What do you think?  Lucky dad right!

Help the guy in your life start happy™ with Fruit of the Loom!  I can honestly say, wearing my husband Fruit of the Loom t-shirts help me start happy™ on days he is away.  There is something about wearing his shirt, and the smell of him that helps me start my day out on the right side of the bed even when he is traveling.  It’s probably the one thing that helps me the most when he is away.
