When To Start Potty Training? Mattie Loves Pull-Ups & Monsters U

by Jenn

I remember I used to always read when to start potty training, I would spend hour’s searching for potty training tips.  It’s always been something that has scared me and excited me at the same time.  Potty training it’s a huge step for both child and parent, and it can be scary.  I think it’s normal to want to know as much as you can on the subject so you’re able to recognize when your toddler is ready.

My husband and I want to have one more child.  We don’t want venture down that road until Mattie is potty trained, and we’re almost there.  I really thought Mattie would be one that would have done it fast, but she has taken her time.  She gets what she is supposed to do, but I think she just isn’t ready yet.  Is there something I was missing?  I have spend a lot of time thinking about what I can do to push her in the right direction, but when it’s all said and done I have to remember not to.  I need to remember she is Mattie, she’s suborn just like her mom and dad, and she will let me know when she is ready if I just stop and pay attention.

Regardless of how bad I want her to do it now, she will do it when she is ready.  Really I think I made her start potty training before she was ready.  I was so excited to get started that I jumped the gun a little, so I had to let off.  This time she is ready, I put all my feelings aside and waited until I knew she was ready.

I remember I used to be so scared that I wouldn’t know what to look for, or how to recognize the signs that she was ready.  Needless to say I did a whole lot of reading, and to be honest I didn’t learn a whole lot.  Here’s what I did learn:

My daughter is my daughter, she isn’t like anyone else.  Reading when to start potty training was a huge waste of time, I learned that normally they start anywhere between 24 to 27 months, but it’s totally normal for it to start much earlier or later.  Everything depends on your child.  So pretty much there are a few signals that children give you to let you know they’re ready for that potty training stage in their life.  WOW, all those month I spend reading summed up just like that.  I spent so many hours searching and reading.  I just wanted one place to tell me when she will be ready!  Is that too much to ask for?  DUH MOM!! When we’re dealing with children, it most certainly is.  When you think they are turning left, oh look they hook a right, or maybe even go in circles.  They’re so much fun, but man can they wear you out, lol.

I was a little stressed out, but it didn’t take long for me to realize that Mattie is an individual, her own little person, and I like that.  I love the thought that my child is not like anyone else, she is crazy, loves to moon me every chance she gets, and she is amazing.  I think once I started to think about things on that level I began to calm down.  Rather than focusing on when she should be potty trained, I focused on signs that she would be ready to start her venture.  If you’re dealing with the same issue, calm down mom it’s totally okay.  There is no way to know how old they’re going to be, but there are signs that we as parents can pick up on to help them along their way.  If you’re at the potty training stage, there is no scientific formula to know when you’re child want to start potty training.  If you’re wondering when to start potty training there are things you look for such as:

  • Responds to praise, likes attention for a job well done.
  • Able to walk to the potty, shows independence, and wants to do things on their own.  While it’s heartbreaking it’s a huge step for your child.
  • Able communicate and tell you they need to potty.
  • Can they follow simple instructions?
  • You’re changing them less.
  • They don’t want to sit in a dirty diaper longer than needed.
  • Shows signs of being interested in the big potty.
  • Understands the value of putting things where they belong.
  • They tell you they have gone to the bathroom.
  • Welcome fun.

Mattie has been so excited about the whole Pull Ups idea.  Once she noticed that Monsters U was on her Pull-Ups she was so excited about using wearing them she went running all over the house telling everyone she had monsters on her big girl diapers, lol.  She has been excited about Pull-Ups, but having Monsters U really put things over the top.  In my opinion making it fun does matter.  If it’s fun and exciting they’re more willing to try.  The last thing we want to do is make it feel like work, who wants to work at two years old right.   I know I would be pretty excited to have Monsters U on my Pull-Ups too.

So in the end here is what I have learned:

Slow down, calm down, be consistent, make it fun and exciting, don’t pressure them, support them.  Focus on your child’s signs, not their age.  Make it fun, make a big deal out of their success regardless of how small it is, and let them know they are awesome.  Tell your kid they are doing great potty-training, and introduce Pull-Ups.  I think Pull-Ups are great, they not only make them feel older, but Mattie noticed right away that Monsters U on her Pull-Ups, and not her baby diapers.  Now she only wants to wear her big girl diapers, “Mom, the ones with Sulley and Mike.”  I almost fell out of my chair, how does she know their names?  Kids are so smart, they know what’s going on, and what they need to do.  We just have to support them, and make everything fun.

Potty-training doesn’t have to be scary, it  should be fun, and in the end it will make things less stressful everyone.  Which is why we have invited Sulley and Mike into our home, you know the Monsters University characters.  I know it’s been more fun for not only Mattie but for me too!

Pull-Ups helps take the scare out of potty training by making it fun and easy with new Monsters U character training pants! You can help make potty training easier by staying consistent and using rituals like the potty break. Make it a game and ask your toddler, “What does a little monster take?”…“A Potty Break!”

I’m so glad those days are long gone! I had mine trained at about two and a half. Diapers are so nasty. The older they get (the kids) the worse it gets.

My son is one of those kids that won’t do it until HE’S ready, but when he does he perfects it. He wasn’t potty trained till he was 3 1/2, but it was done in 2 days! He was finally ready, and that was that! He was too big for Pull-Ups by that time, so we went straight to underwear.

Training pants have come a long way! When I trained my girls, I wasn’t able to use the disposable training pants. I washed “big girl panties” every day!!! What an awesome product that would have been! They are making them cuter than ever now…I love the Monsters :)
