Most of you know I live in New Mexico, it’s HOT, but that doesn’t stop us from outdoor activities. We’re just smart about them – choose the right time of day, wear proper clothing, and, of course, bring along Banana Boat® Sunscreen to protect our skin.
Keeping the kids occupied during the summer gets tricky and takes planning. Here are a few of our favorite summertime outdoor activities for children.
12 Outdoor Activities for Kids in the Summer
Here are 12 of our favorite activities for kids in the summer. I hope you find a few for you and the kids to enjoy. Oh, and don’t forget the sunscreen!
Go hiking – I have learned it’s often cooler in the mountains, and there are often more trees, which means more shade, and it’s cooler. I try to pick a day when its cooler outside and we’ll drive up to the Lincoln National Forrest for a day of hiking and adventure.
Splash – Kids love the water, and it’s a great way to stay cool, but don’t forget your sunscreen. You don’t have to have anything special either, grab some old water bottles, balloons or just the hose and have fun staying cool.
Film a movie in the backyard – Yes, we do this often, and it’s SO MUCH fun! Before we get started, we talk about the film, come up with a storyline, and we roll. Things get crazy, and everyone has a blast.
Breakfast at the park – If it’s going to be hot, we plan breakfast at the park. It’s a great way to get the outside time we need and beat the heat, well sort of, we still put on our sunscreen. It’s still warm even in the mornings.
Sunflowers – Grow a sunflower garden, if there is any flower that grows fast and tall it’s a sunflower.
Evening cloud watching – One of our favorite evening activities is laying on the trampoline watching the clouds while we BBQ.
Paint outside – I get pieces of wood we have laying around and make frames, we use an old sheet for the canvas and head outside for some inspiration. It’s loads of fun and perfect the perfect morning activity.
Lemonade Stand – Right now the girls and I are building a Lemonade Stand. I’m not sure how well business, will be on our road, but maybe the girls will make enough to go grab a snow cone or hamburger down the road.
Sidewalk Chalk Games – If there is one thing my kids like it’s drawing on the sidewalk because they get to surprise dad with all sorts of awesome drawings on the sidewalk when it gets home. It never fails, he always notices and compliments them on their artwork. Now and then they will get old clothing and draw people outside lol. It’s super cute, and they have fun.
Pet haircuts – Most of you know we’re animal lovers. We have a Lion Head Rabbit, two Flemish Giant Rabbits, three dogs and three cats. Plus, my sister lives with us and has two dogs, Lop Eared Rabbit, and two water turtles, lol. We love our furry members of the family and turtles, lol. However, several of them need haircuts, especially during the summer. Poor Bun Bun my Lion Head Rabbit, she always looks so mad when I’m finished lol.
Hide and go seek – This is one of my all-time favorite games. You remember hide and go seek don’t you? Try playing with your kids it will bring back memories and create new ones at the same time.
Evening walks – There is no better way to finish the day than with a calm evening walk. Don’t forget to apply Banana Boat® Sunscreen before you head out the door. Even though the sun isn’t as bright and it’s not as, hot you still need to put sunscreen on to protect your skin and your families skin from the sun.
Spending time outdoors is important, but so is protecting the family from the sun. As parents it’s our job to make sun protection top priority by using sunscreen to protect against painful sunburns and the long term effects the sun has on skin that we can’t see, like skin damage and skin cancer. It’s important to carry sunscreen, with you on all your outdoor activities this summer – biking, walking, hiking, swimming, etc.
Planning is important for summertime activities for kids and planning definitely applies with sunscreen. Before heading outside, consider how long your family will be outdoors and how many times everyone will need to reapply.
Did you know Banana Boat® sun care products are tested in seven different conditions, which are:
- Pool water
- Sun
- Ocean Water
- Wind
- Sand
- Sweat
- Extreme heat
Sunscreen Tip: Apply 2 tablespoons (1 ounce) of sunscreen to you and your families entire body 30 minutes before heading outdoors, be sure to reapply every two hours or immediately after your’ finished swimming or sweating excessively.
Since we can’t control the weather many outings or events may be hosted in different conditions, luckily Banana Boat® has us covered with great products that offer multi-skin benefits. If you’re a beachgoer you might consider trying Banana Boat®’s new SunComfort™ Clear UltraMist® Sunscreen, which provides water resistance, Broad Spectrum UVA/UVB protection, and it allows the sad to brush of nice and easy.
