5 Coolest New Garage Door Technologies

by Jenn

How many times have you driven away from your home wondering if you’ve closed to the garage door or left the largest, most public door in your home wide open? How many times have you turned around and driven back home only to find that you did actually close the door and just wasted precious commute time? In a world chock full of automatic door openers and sensors, to err is human and also very common. Fortunately with today’s advances in garage door technologies when the inevitable human error does occur there are solutions designed to make your interactions with your garage technology more stable and even more enjoyable.

With new garage door technology you can kiss having to be nearby and mash a large button in order to open or close your garage door goodbye. Now you can control your garage door from anywhere in the world and you can even do it with an app on your smart device by simply connecting the garage door controller to your home network. Connecting to the network opens a world of garage door control options that were previously simply unavailable.

This feature also goes beyond the normal uses of simply securing your garage. You can use the technology to give someone access to your home while you are away or simply open up the garage for a delivery and then close it once the item has been securely placed inside your newly secured garage. Some new garage doors now come with timers that allow for the garage door to be open for a set period of time so if you open the garage door and drive off you’ll know that the door will be open for a max of five minutes and then automatically close. These technologies also allow the homeowner to set the time frame for automatically closing the door and even allow automatic opening at set times.

In order to make sure that the garage door that is closing won’t come down on the family dog or crunch your kids favorite toys, new garage doors now have sensors which scan the area below the door to make sure that the closing of the door will be safe.

In addition to scanning the area for safety sensors can now report when the door is open or even send an alert to your phone if the garage door has been opened which provides the homeowner with an additional level of safety and security.

Internet-based cameras can now be installed in your garage that connect with your home network IP camera’s allow you to monitor activity that is occurring inside your garage. So if you’ve opened the garage door to let your neighbor in to borrow a rake you can keep an eye on your neighbor to make sure a rake is all they take. Ditto for remotely opening the garage door for delivery people– with a camera you can make sure that delivery people simply deliver what they came to deliver while you are gone without taking anything.

Motion sensors that are generally attached to a home security system now can monitor your garage for unwanted motion inside of your garage with alerts going directly to the security company that monitors your system as well as delivered directly to your smart device.

Another advance in garage door technology allows homeowners to control the lighting inside and the garage while they are away. This is especially convenient if you’re going to be out of the home later than planned and want to turn on the lights inside the garage to make it look like you are home.

Oh wow I sure could have used something like this. Our last house had the automatic garage door. But, I had such OCD that almost every time I would leave the house I would get a block away and turn around and drive by my house to make sure that I actually shut the door. It got so bad that I would say “the garage is closed” 3 times before pulling out and STILL going back to check. Text message reassuring this would have been a great thing to have

So cool! If you can do this with your garage door, I would like to see if it is possible to check your other doors, windows, appliances (did I leave the stove on?).
