5 Tools for Parents Support Their Childs Education

by Jenn

Being a parent and helping your child success academically is a challenge all of it’s own, adding Common Core State Standards, Common Core-aligned tests such as PARCC is enough to make parents head spin.  I want my children to be successful, but to successfully support them and their education I need to have answers and when I have questions I need them answered right away.  Parental support is one of the largest out-of-school factors to your child’s success, but we also need to be able to understand the changes happening in our children’s schools.  If parents had better information and resources to help them understand all the changes taking place we could support our kids education better from home.

I still cannot believe that my little Mattie is done with preschool and heading off to kindergarten next year and I’m not sure how I feel about it.  Honestly?  I wish she was 3 again, still needed more 80% of the time, and wasn’t so darn independent.  It’s hard once kids head off to school, there’s a whole new playing field for them to learn.

There’s nothing worse than your child asking for help with their homework, and a parent have no idea how to help them because they are being taught using different strategies than we were taught.  Since we are not with our children in the classroom but we want to support our child’s academic success there really should be some resources for parents to turn to.

Last year my daughter needed help with her math.  Cool great, I’m good at math.  All I needed to know was how she was being taught to solve the problem.  The last thing I want to do is confuse her even more by showing her the way we did it back in my day, lol.  We’d get the right answer, but it would just make the situation worse for her.  So I grab her book flip through it looking for an example, but there wasn’t any.  Rather than risking the chance of confusing my daughter we skipped it and I sent her teacher a text message to let her know.  Thankfully she had an amazing teacher last year that I trusted.  I’m sure many of you have had similar situations or had questions about the Common Core State Standards and Common Core-aligned tests such as PARCC that kids had to take this year.  Thankfully, parents finally have a place to get questions answered and have access to tools and because they need to support their child’s education from home with BeALearningHero.com.
