Life is full of responsibilities and can be demanding both physically and mentally. It is crucial that we get good sleep and plenty of rest so we can recharge to take on another day. I know when I am unable to get the sleep I need I become restless, irritable and discontent which doesn’t make me such a pleasure to be around.

1.) Set a Sleep Schedule

Just as with all our errands and responsibilities, putting a schedule for sleep into use can be very beneficial. Avoiding bright lights and engaging in a relaxing activity an hour before bed allows our bodies to recognize the sleep mode. This enables us to get a more sound and deeper sleep that rejuvenates us.

2.) Regulate What You Eat & Drink

A large meal just before bed disrupts our sleep cycle. Indigestion, frequent bathroom trips and discomfort hinders deep sleep causing us to wake feeling unrested and irritable. Drinking a large quantity of liquid before bed, obviously, is going to result in bathroom breaks throughout the night. Though a large amount to drink isn’t recommended, a warm cup of tea or milk can often help relax before bedtime.

3.) Create a Bedtime Routine

Setting up a bedtime routine helps our bodies to recognize sleep mode and will help us to relax and calm the mind. Doing something relaxing and avoiding stressors such as work or family problems helps to ensure a productive night’s rest. A routine at bedtime is a great time to unwind and calm the mind and I find meditating helps to relieve tension that the day has built up. Focusing on my breathing and clearing my mind helps to get my body into a relaxed state and allows sleep to come easier.

4.) Comfortable Mattress, Pillows and Sheets

We spend a large chunk of our lifetimes in bed either sleeping or lounging. A comfortable mattress, fluffy pillows and soft sheets are a necessity for a good night’s rest. 5.) Avoid Naps

If you are anything like me, a nap on a cool, rainy afternoon is a very peaceful time. Well, those naps need to be avoided. After waking from naps, some people can feel groggy and even more tired than they were before they fell asleep. Sleeping during the day can also affect your drive to sleep at night and keep your body and mind from adjusting to sleep mode.

Short naps can sometimes cause and/or worsen insomnia during the night and make it difficult to reach the phase of REM sleep that we need to get our full rest. Naps can be beneficial if they are at the right time and for a reasonable time limit, but it is best to avoid a nap if possible.

6.) Exercise

Daily physical activity has a wide variety of benefits like heart health and a desired body and weight. Along with these advantages, exercise can help a person’s sleep at night. It is proven that exercise decreases anxiety, stress and depression. These mental stressors can hinder our sleep and with exercise helping to alleviate them, sleep is much easier to achieve and maintain. Physical activity also affects our circadian rhythm, or body clock, keeping it on a regular schedule. I find that stress-free yoga or a quiet run in the morning keeps me more alert during the day and helps me to fall asleep at night.

7.) Cool Temperature in the Bedroom

I mentioned before that night sweats are often the main reason my sleep is interrupted. It makes sense to keep my room cooler at night, at about 60-65 degrees F. A cooler room keeps me from getting too warm and breaking out in that uncomfortable dampness. 8.) Avoid Alcohol

It seems like alcohol would be a good way to help us fall asleep, but in actuality hurts our rest. Though it is a depressant and may help us fall asleep, it causes us to wake up frequently. Whether it be a bathroom break or discomfort, it is known that alcohol does have a negative effect on our circadian rhythm. This can lead to sleeping difficulties in the future. Alcohol also relaxes the muscles in the nasal and chest cavities, leading to heavy breathing, snoring and disrupted rest. The best bet is to limit or eliminate alcohol intake to ensure healthful and productive sleep.

A good night’s rest doesn’t have to be a hard to reach and these tips have helped me.
