Tips for Keeping Memories of Baby’s Milestones

by Jenn Brockman

There’s nothing more special than the moment you become a new parent.  There are so many emotions new parents go through, not to mention the joy of experiencing your baby’s first milestones and the stress of all your firsts. The last thing you want to do is miss any milestones, and children grow so quickly milestones happen much quicker than we would like.

In the blink of an eye, your baby is a toddler, and before you know it, they’re heading off to kindergarten.  Therefore, I decided to share a few ways to celebrate your baby’s milestones and document them in a thoughtful way.

Tips For Keeping Memories of Baby's Firsts

Tips For Keeping Memories of Baby’s Milestones

There are so many firsts your baby will experience you’ll want to document as many as possible, so you can share them with family, friends, and one day your baby.  From sounds, laughs, and first words to scoots, crawls, and first birthdays there are fun and meaningful ways you can document your little one’s first milestones.

  • Create a memories and milestones book – You can use anything from a three-ring binder to a photo album.  Be as creative as you like, paint it, draw on it, or leave it plain.  This is a great place to leave little notes, photos, and more.  It’s a great keepsake you can return to and remember all of the firsts you and your baby experienced together and one day when baby is all grown up it will make a great gift.
  • Weekly/Monthly Pictures – I have heard many parents do monthly pictures, but weekly always worked better for me.   We live in a world where cameras don’t need film,  snap photos, and upload them to your computer where you can edit, save, share and print them.  If you don’t have a good camera you might consider purchasing one, so you’re able to take pictures weekly, so you can look back and see how your baby has grown and changed.  You’ll be surprised how much growing your little one does over a month’s time.
  • Little notebook – I purchased a small notebook and every time my daughter did something new for the first time I would grab the notebook and write her a little note.  I would include what she did – walking, talking, teething, splashing, and the other firsts – And how watching her reach yet another milestone made me feel.  I know one day she will appreciate looking back at that little notebook as much as I enjoyed making it.
  • YouTube/Videos – Create monthly videos and upload them to YouTube, OneDrive or another program that allows you to upload videos, share them and with family and friends.  You’ll want to save them so one day your baby can look back and see how quickly they grew.  Don’t forget the music, it’s amazing, but all my children danced like nobody was watching, little did they know it’s caught on my camera.

  • Include Siblings – Don’t forget to include interactions with siblings.  Some of the most memorable moments I have of my youngest daughter is her spending time with her siblings.  From fighting to lovable moments, everything is better with siblings in the picture.  Mattie smiles bigger and laughs harder when her big sister(s) and brother are in the photo.
  • Mommy and daddy moments – Don’t forget to take a picture and create videos and memories with your little one.  It’s easy to get wrapped up in your little one, and their milestones and forget to snap a selfie from time to time.  Try to remember you and your little one will appreciate it.  If the baby is talking to daddy for the first time, or playing with his mustache be sure to snap the shot and talk to dad, so he does the same for you.  The more firsts you have together, the better for everyone.
  • First foods – Don’t forget to pull out the camera/video camera to watch the baby try their first foods.  It doesn’t have to be the first time they eat solid foods either, trying sweet potatoes or peaches for the first time can have some fun faces.  Oh, and the first-time baby eats alone, be sure to snap a few shots for memory and milestone book.
  • Mirror – Be ready for the first-time baby sees themselves in a mirror, it might be a great moment to add to your memory and milestone book.

  • Be ready for firsts – One second they’re eating cereal and the next they’re taking their first steps.  Be prepared for all the firsts that have yet to come.  Keep your camera, video recorder or smartphone close.  If you’re using a smartphone, be sure you can quickly access the camera and video button.  You want to catch as many firsts as you can, and the best tip I can give you is to be ready for anything; kids are fun and unpredictable.

While there are so many fun, memorable milestones, it also pays off to be prepared because you never know when baby will experience something for the first time.  You might also want to be prepared for the memorable, yet not so fun and often painful milestone– teething!  You guessed it, while their first tooth looks pretty darn adorable; it’s painful for the baby.
