Arrrrr Matey. There be rough shoals ahead. So batten down the main sail and make fast the sheets or I’ll be keel hauling you ya mangy dog.
That’s right, Talk Like a Pirate Day is coming up again. The hubby loves talk like a Pirate Day, especially when it falls on a work day. This year he’s going to have to walk around an amusement park with our daughter all day instead of work, I’m pretty sure he’ll be talking like a Pirate all Day long to our daughter.
But talking like a Pirate isn’t really about sounding like a pirate. It’s about using your imagination. Pirates have captured the popular imagination for ages and Talk Like a Pirate Day is a way to gets your kids to use their imagination. As with many things, our imagination is probably a lot better than the real thing. For instance your kids can crawl through a tunnel instead of swabbing the deck. Instead of having to swing across to a ship they are raiding and face the loss of life or limb they can swing around an obstacle course. Instead of eating, well, whatever pirates really ate, which was probably not terribly appetizing, they can eat some Pirate’s Booty (No, not Pirate Booty, that’s something else entirely and not appropriate here). Pirate’s Booty is not popcorn, it is actual a healthy but tasty baked rice and corn puff treat that your kid’s will love. Did you ever stop to wonder what Pirates really ate? The more I think about it the more I don’t want to know. But if you do want to learn about pirates there is a way for you and your little ones to do just that.
Did you know there is a Pirate School? Run by the zany buccaneer Billy Bones (aka David Engel). Pirate School teaches kids of all ages how to use their imagination to talk, sing, and laugh like a buccaneer. He teaches young ones all about pirates in a non-violent joyful way that lets them explore the pirate lifestyle, without having to face scurvy, keelhauling or eventual destruction at the hands of the British Navy. In Pirate School your kids can learn the importance of maintaining a swashbuckling lifestyle, putting down the tablets and video games for fun and adventure on the high seas. Or if you don’t happen to live in the Caribbean and have a frigate handy, you can at least get them outside to play Pi-Pi-Pirate (the pirate version of duck duck goose) or tug of war or Pass the Squid. In case you don’t know what those are, check out http://www.mypirateschool.com/ to see all the fun pirate games. Then when they are done and all worn out, they can have a healthy snack like Veggie Volcano’s or Pirate’s Booty.
So whether your little buccaneer is a full blown veteran pirate captain or a new swabby, get them out on Talk Like a Pirate Day. And remember, you can do more than just talk like a pirate.
