Ready to start a blog? I have decided to start a Blogging 101 series, not claiming to be a pro. I simply want to share my learnings with anyone thinking about starting a new venture. Honestly when I began my venture into the blogosphere I knew absolutely nothing, so I thought I would share what I have learned along the way. Hopefully, if you are looking to start a blog you will find a few useful tips.
For me, blogging has changed my life more than I would have ever imagined. It’s taken me to places I would have never dreamed, more importantly it’s helped me start a business, work from home, and be with my family. Rasing four children, and working outside of the home had it’s perks, but nothing beats staying home and raising my babies.
Things to Think About Before You Start a Blog
I began my blogging venture, knowing nothing that it would change my life the way it did. If you are considering starting a blog I hope you find it as rewarding as I did, and here are a few tips to help you start a blog.
Do your research!
I cannot stress this enough, know what you’re getting yourself into. This is something I wish I would have done more of, I just jumped. Read blogs, follow blogs to see what they really do on daily basis. Get with your soon to be best friend, Google and research questions. Talk to bloggers, there are a ton of them that would be willing to answer any questions I am able to.
Choosing a URL
Before starting your blog pick a consistent URL, make sure it is something you like. Trust me from experience, you will not want to change it later. Every time your URL is changed it is like starting over. Choose your blog URL carefully, if you’re not sure what your blog will be about, hold off until you are certain. I started out not knowing much about blogging, however I knew I could be long-winded, so I choose Jenn’s Blah Blah Blog. Since then I have started other blogs! I given them names that fit better such as Simply Shawn & Jenn (mom and dad blog), Mom’s Vacation Spots (travel blog), coming soon is my Pink Ninja Blogger (this one is a surprise). When choosing your URL make sure it is neat, not too long, choose a URL that will work long-term.
WordPress or Blogger?
My suggestion, start out with WordPress! Not internet savvy? Understandable if you reach to start a blog on Blogger, I did too. Blogger can be more user friendly if you are just starting out and not technically savvy. However, you will more than likely eventually want to move to WordPress.
Do yourself a favor, if you’re planning on seriously blogging start a blog using WordPress. This will save time and possibly money (if you pay someone to move to WordPress) in the future. It is worth, holding off launching your blog. Take some time to familiarize yourself with WordPress, research plugins, and any questions you have.
I do suggest doing a little research, starting with a hosted WordPress blog can save time and money in the end. There are many powerful plugins available with a hosted WordPress blog. Have questions, I would be happy to help with anything that I can.
Choosing what to blog about
Choosing your blog niche can be a difficult task, think about it careful before you start a blog. Choose something you enjoy and passionate about. Possibilities are seriously endless. Look to other blogs for inspiration, what blogs do you love? What is something you can write about day after day?
Getting your blog out there along with getting followers is hard work, it takes time. Social networking sites such as Facebook, Twitter, StumbleUpon, etc. Social media networks are wonderful places for finding prospective readers. Building your network can be most time-consuming task of them all. Honestly, a never ending task is building your readership.
If you’re serious about blogging you’re always going to want more followers. It is also extremely rewarding, watching followers grow can be somewhat addicting . It’s such a rewarding feeling to know that people are reading your blog! Now, getting your fans to not only read but comment on your posts can be a task all in its own. Do not give up, simply keep blogging, it will come.
Do you have to be internet savvy?
It makes things easier if you know your way around the internet. Being technically savvy will make blogging much easier. I knew nothing about blogging, SEO, page ranking. Learn as you go, there is always something changing so take it step by step, Google will become your best friend.
My experience has been that most bloggers are extremely helpful and willing to help a blogger in need.
(timeout) I just wanted to say something, one of the biggest reasons I am still blogging. I completely love what I do! My fellow bloggers and readers! I’ve honestly never been around so many amazing people willing to help in my life. I’ve run into a few, that are sour, not willing to help or just plain rude, but only a handful out of thousands of bloggers and readers out there! Everyone is amazing, which is my biggest reason for staying! If you’re a blogger you know what I mean. If you’re thinking about taking this venture, I am here to tell you bloggers and readers are amazing! The entire experiences has been awesome. (back to business)
Be ready for work!
I cannot stress this enough, BLOGGING IS HARD WORK! Maybe, comes easy to some bloggers, but it has been my experience that blogging is time-consuming. Be ready, put your thinking cap on! I have worked my whole life, many jobs. Blogging is by far the hardest job I have run into. If you’re planning on trying to make money blogging be ready for long hours without any reward in the beginning. Be ready for up’s and down’s. One the flip side, it can also be one of the most rewarding jobs out there.
Once your blogs starts growing will be hooked! Watching blog ranking increase, readers grow, page rank go up! It is the best feeling to know that your hard works has paid off.
