Your skin is the largest organ in your body but as it is also on the outside, it is subject to all manner of insults. This includes pollution, toxins such as cigarette smoke, and the damaging ultraviolet rays of the sun. Ultimately, time and gravity take a toll on your skin as well. Here are four treatments to help your skin look its best.
Chemical Peels
Chemical peels are used to remove fine lines and even out skin tone on your face through use of a chemical solution. This solution removes the dead upper layer of your skin and causes your body to replace it with skin cells that are fresh and supple. Chemical peels can be light, moderate, or deep.
Laser Therapy
Cosmetologists use laser therapy to treat people with skin problems such as rosacea, hyperpigmentation, and spider veins. Certain types of lasers, including KTP lasers, use heat to destroy areas of hyperpigmentation in your skin while not harming the normal skin around it. You’ll need to have three to five sessions of laser therapy scheduled over a few weeks for it to be effective.
Skin Rejuvenation Treatments
Chemical peels and laser therapy are one of many types of skin rejuvenation treatments. Another is dermabrasion and its gentler form, microdermabrasion. In dermabrasion, the dermatologist removes the dead cells at the top layer of the skin with a diamond burr and a tiny vacuum. In microdermabrasion, they remove the skin cells with a spray of crystals. If you want to be gentler still, scrubs that use salt or sugar are even gentler ways to exfoliate your skin.
Botox
Botox is famous for smoothing out wrinkles and furrows in your skin, especially the skin of your face, hands, and neck. It is a very diluted and purified botulinum toxin, the same type of toxin that causes botulism. It works by paralyzing the muscle beneath a wrinkle after it’s injected. This causes the wrinkle to smooth out. The results are long-lasting, and even if the wrinkle returns, it won’t be as deep as it was before.
Whether you have spider veins, rosacea, uneven pigmentation, folds, fine lines, wrinkles or areas where your skin is unattractively thin and dry, there is some kind of treatment for your skin problem. Most treatments are safe, and some are so gentle and quick that they can be done on your lunch hour. Ask your dermatologist about what type of treatment is right for your skin.
