Over the years, our appliances have changed dramatically from when the first washer and dryer entered our grandmothers home. Now days, ENERGY STAR® washers and dryers make doing laundry much easier and less of a chore. It is better for our environment by being more efficient and less expensive.
I like the ENERGY STAR® washers and dryers for several reasons. First, is the energy saved really makes a difference in your utility bills. If all the washers sold in the U.S. were ENERGY STAR® Certified, we could save $4 Billion dollars each year by using 25% less energy and 45% less water than standard models. Now I have heard that in our future, there will be a shortage of drinkable water unless we start saving now.
There are several advantages to ENERGY STAR® products. Over the lifetime of the product, an ENERGY STAR® Certified clothes washer saves 1,100 kwh and more than 2.5 million BTU’s of natural gas, saves 33,000 gallons of water and can save you $490.00 in your water and electricity bills. To see how much you could save, look at your electric bill and see what a kwh cost then take that times 1,100. Same with the gas bill, if you have gas, which will give you an idea of the amount of money you will start saving the minute you start using ENERGY STAR® products. And, you know our utility bills constantly get larger every year.
Best Buy is committed to positively impacting the environment and our communities by offering their customers a large selection of energy efficient products including ENERGY STAR® Certified electronics and appliances.
ENERGY STAR® certified clothes washers are available in either front-load or the newest designed top-load where there is no agitator saving energy and water. The redesigned top-load washing machines clean your clothes just like the older models except the tub does not fill up with water anymore, this is a tremendous savings for large families. Several years ago, we purchased a front-load ENERGY STAR® washer and dryer and I was very surprised at how well the clothes came clean. I have heard rumors about a front-load washers and was hesitating to buy one but now I would never change it. My husband works on cars so he is always dealing with greasy parts and my front-load gets his clothing cleaner than our previous top-load. I can even throw in his baseball cap and it comes out spotless. There are high spin speeds now days that extracts the water faster leaving less moisture in the clothes creating less drying time in the dryer. Front-load and the advanced top-load clothes washers have sophisticated wash systems that use a variety of methods to lift and flip your clothing and are even safe at cleaning silk, wool and other hand-washables.
ENERGY STAR® Certified clothes dryers use about 20% less energy by offering low heat settings and steam cycles. Using a low heat setting makes drying time a bit longer but uses less energy. You think it would be the opposite but it’s not. Look for “energy-saving” selection for the best results. Many manufactures now offer Steam Cycles which is great for saving time on ironing clothes and preventing wrinkles.
