Have you ever stopped think about what the term “family moments” really means to you? Family, and special moments have always been important to me, even the smallest things that happened while we were sitting at the dinner table, they all matter. I even have a special book for each one of my kids, I call them my “Special Moments Books”, and one day I will hand them off to my children. They are filled with little things the kids said that made me smile, pictures of when they thought they were cool, special girl days, mom son days, everything is in these books all our special moments.
I recently had reality come and slap me in the face – hard too! Catie turned 15. She has changed so much, and I value my time with her more now than ever. I am lucky, because she does still love to spend time with her mom and, but NOT like she used to. She used to bug me until I gave in to do something crazy with her, she used to come and crawl in my bed because she missed me over the night. Catie is my stepchild, but you would never in a million years guess so by the way we act. She’s a special kid, and I cannot tell you how much I love her, and how much it hurts letting go – even if it’s little by little.
Family has always been important to Catie, but as she grows older I noticed her boyfriend and friends become more and more important, and that quality family time that used to matter so much, still matters, but not like it used to. She is growing up! She has her a wonderful boyfriend, and she is in love for her first time. It’s sweet, and I am happy for her, but it’s also made me realize how I much I need to value every last moment I have with my children. There is no going backward, or making up for lost time.
This slap into reality has made my husband and I realize we need to fit as much time in with the kids as we can. Suddenly saving for little personal things we wanted are tossed on the back-burner, because we are planning a family vacation. Suddenly dads awesome Camaro is being traded in so we have more money to do things with the kids. I don’t want to say we are making up for lost time, but we learned a lot with Catie. We learned that all those things that my husband and I wanted can wait, right now it’s about making those special moments that last a lifetime with our kids. We have other kids who are still little and planning one more, for the next at least 18 years our lives will be focused around our kids.
We have tons of great memories with our children, vacation, BBQ’s, and those fun family table moments. You know the little ones that matter so much, the ones that if we are not careful we can forget to pay attention to.
