The hubby has always been a bit of a…well, I don’t want to say cheapskate…let’s just say he’s frugal. About some things. Did Lego just put out the mongo deluxe 1/5 scale Millennium Falcon made from 4,000,000 Lego bricks and costing $37,000? He’ll go right out and buy that. Monthly gas and electric bill? Endless complaining if we go over the average energy usage. Which we do. Every month. So we have taken some steps to work on that.
We have a programmable thermostat. This used to help out a lot. When we didn’t have kids and weren’t occupying our home 24/7. When it was just me and the hubby and we both worked, the house was allowed to get warmer or cooler during the day (depending on the season) and ditto at night when we were asleep. Post kid…not so much. Plus you have to do a LOT more laundry and give a lot more baths when you have kids.
We have LED or compact fluorescent light bulbs in all of our lights (thanks to our local energy company we were able to get the LED bulbs at a huge discount).
But those still don’t cut it. So the hubby came up with a new idea to help us be a little more energy efficient. No idea if it will really pan out or not, but here it is. Insulation. No, not for the house, there’s already plenty of that. I mean insulation on our water pipes. Specifically the hot water pipes. The hubby’s thought goes like this: Most of the copper piping running from the hot water tank to the various faucets is exposed in the basement. The basement stays pretty cool year round; “temperature” cool, not “oh that’s such an awesome space” cool. So he thought if the pipes had insulation, maybe the water would lose less heat to the basement. So a few sections of that black foamy tube insulation later, all the exposed copper piping running OUT of the hot water tank to our faucets is now insulated.
What do you think? Should I enter the hubby’s idea in Lennox’s Energy Savings Superstar Contest?
