How to Introduce Kids to Electronics

by Jenn

The world as we know it revolves around technology, whether we like it or not! In fact, by 2025, it’s predicted that there will be a staggering 64.9 million smartphone users in the UK. As such, the youth of today must be familiar with technology, so they don’t get left behind.

Although it may sound daunting, teaching kids the fundamentals when it comes to electronics is crucial for their development. If you’re not sure how, read on for some handy tips and tricks.

Why are electronics beneficial for kids?

For children even younger than preschool age, electronic devices can help children’s imagination, senses and speech. But the benefits of learning electronics are far greater than that.

Electronics is one of the key foundational skills that children should learn to grasp a basic understanding of tech. By teaching children electronics, you are shaping up the next generation of computing and robotics geniuses that can go on to fill the skills shortage.

And even if your child doesn’t go on to become an electronics prodigy, 82% of all businesses list digital skills as a requirement, so teaching electronics is setting your children up for success.

How to introduce your kids to electronics?

So, we’ve stated the importance of teaching electronics to kids, but how do you go about doing so?

Luckily, it’s easier than you’d think! Some ways include:

  1. Explain some basic circuit diagrams

Electronic circuits can be explained by using simple diagrams. As such, it’s easy to teach your kids the primary concepts of electronics. By teaching your children all about voltage, currents, resistance, closed-loop circuits and ohm’s law, you can start laying the foundations early.

  1. Use some online resources

Nowadays there are a wealth of resources online that can do a lot of explaining for you! Whether that’s watching interactive videos or playing fun games, you can still start teaching your kids about electronics, even if you’re not an expert yourself.

  1. Invest in some electronic kits

If your child is just starting, STEM invention kits are a great way to introduce the world of electronics. A kit normally comes with a PCB, the components required and some instructions to get you going. As a responsible adult, you do need to know the basics of soldering, but that can easily be picked up if you follow some simple instructions!

Then, you’re ready to have some electronic fun!

Final thoughts…

No matter what, the most important part is about letting your children have fun and experiment. Although you probably won’t be able to build a robot right from the off, by laying some solid foundations, you never know where you might end up!
