Finding toys that engage my kids is not always easy, especially if it is not a video game or some other electronic device. Some of the toys they do like consist of small parts, which are not only a hassle to pick up, but they worry me with the baby running around. You can only imagine how excited I was when WowWee sent me Magnaflex to review.
Founded in 1988, WowWee is a leader when it comes to designing and developing hi-tech products for both kids and adults. In 2004, the company introduced the Robosapien™ which changed the way people interacted with robots. This product was a success with consumers around the world and the overwhelming response inspired the company to create robots with even more capabilities. In 2014, WowWee released another robot, MiP. Not only is it one of the most popular consumer robots available, it has won its fair share of awards, including Best Toys of 2015 by Parents Magazine.
WowWee focuses on developing breakthrough products that are loaded with the latest technology, extremely durable and highly entertaining. On their website you can find robots, intelligent vehicles, speakers, and even interactive pets. They even offer an app so consumers can control their products through their smart device. However, WowWee also recognizes the need for educational toys that engage kids in hands-on, creative play. This is where Magnaflex comes in.
Magnaflex are colorful magnetic strips that you can bend and connect to create whatever you dream up. The pieces are made from unique materials that ensure total flexibility. They also feature neodymium rare-earth magnets inside for a strong magnetic connection. The strips come in sets that also include connector pieces so kids can put their creativity skills to work. An instruction guide is also included and it is complete with project ideas. With Magnaflex, kids can build 2D or 3D flowers, cars, basic shapes, and so much more. This educational toy promotes imaginative play while also enhancing fine motor skills.
I received the 34 piece Magnaflex Critters set, and I have to admit, I was glad it arrived while the kids were at school. This gave me some time to really check it out and play with it. I was pleasantly surprised after opening the box and pulling out the pieces. They were large enough that I did not have to worry about the baby putting them in her mouth, and they were so bendable. The strips also connected together easily and they held tight to eliminate the frustration of falling and slipping pieces. I realized right away that this product will entertain both kids and adults.
I really could go on about Magnaflex for hours, but to avoid putting you to sleep, I will just highlight some of my favorite features. I truly love that there is no right or wrong play with this toy. Kids can create any item they want without having to follow lengthy instructions that may frustrate them. Since it keeps their little hands busy, I believe the toy could also work well as a sensory item or to help keep kids from fidgeting.
My boys were absolutely enamored with Magnaflex. They literally spent hours the first day we had it creating object after object. My teen daughter even joined in and created a ladybug using the instructions. Regardless of what the kids created, they were proud of it because they did it all by themselves. I believe one of my 8 year old’s favorite aspects of the toy is that they are a breeze to pick up. He held one strip by its end and moved over every piece until a chain was formed. He never even had to touch the other pieces! Since the kits are interchangeable, you can bet we’ll be adding to our collection.
There are several different Magnaflex kits available including the animals, vehicles, and wearables sets. The prices start at $19.99. The critters set I received is $49.99 and you can find it on Amazon or at Toys “R” Us. These kits are recommended for ages 3 and up.
