Packing Tips To Fit More In Your Suitcase

by Jenn Brockman

I love to travel, but I have to admit I am glad to be taking a break from traveling via plane.  This summer I was on the go every other week, and I started to miss my family more and more each time.  If you’re a parent, you know traveling with kids isn’t easy.  I was traveling so much I was starting to think traveling without kids was harder than bringing them along.

Now that I’ve been home for a few months, I’m starting to get the travel bug.  Which is great because I have a few things coming up, that made me start thinking about packing and how badly used to be at packing, lol.  After traveling this summer, I learned several packing tips to help fit more in your suitcase.  There is a technique to getting everything to fit in one carry-on bag, and here are a few tips to make sure fit more in your suitcase.  There is a technique to getting everything to fit in one carry-on bag, and here are a few tips to make sure you’re bag isn’t busting at the seams.

If you’re looking for a few carry-on packing tips here are a few tips to help you fit more in your suitcase so you hopefully don’t have to stress checking a bag.

  • Only take what you need – My husband hates watching me pack because I take everything I think I might, maybe wear.  However, 90% of it doesn’t get touched until it’s shoved back in my carry-on for the flight home.  If you think you might wear it, you’re not going to – LEAVE IT!
  • Wheels – I don’t care what I read, wheels are the only way to go.  There is no way I’m going to carry my luggage until I get on the plane, especially when you end up at the Dallas Airport and have to walk four miles to catch your next flight.  Get the luggage with wheels!  It allows you to get the most out of your suitcase, and not have to lug the heavy bag all over the airport, or even worse in between flights.
  • Liquids – Don’t take any liquids you’re not going to need.  Think about where you are going, and what you will need in terms of personal hygiene products and beauty products.  The containers cannot be larger than 3 ounces, so stick to the basics.
  • Shoes – Ladies, I know this is easier said than done, but limit yourself to two pairs of shoes.  One pair of business/evenings shoes and one pair of comfortable walking shoes.  Don’t take more than you need, shoes are bulk, heavy, and take up tons of room.
  • Landry – If you’re going to be gone a while consider doing a load of laundry and not checking a bag.  Doing a load of laundry at the hotel will be cheaper than checking a bag round trip.
  • Electronics – This is the hardest one for me to do.  I want to take my smartphone, tablet with all accessories (it’s like a mini laptop), and my laptop.  Why in the name of technology do I need all that stuff?  I don’t, so I’ve learned to downsize.  I can use my smartphone on the plane, and my laptop for things to do during a layover, but leave the extras at home.  Oh, and don’t forget chargers for everything.
  • Roll clothing – There are certain pieces of clothing, which you can roll and not fold.  T-shirts, jeans, and other pieces of clothing that will not wrinkle can be rolled and save you plenty of room.
  1. Pants – roll from the weight down to the hem, smoothing as you go.
  2. Skirts – fold into thirds and roll from weight to the hem.
  3. Shirts – fold in each sleeve and roll from the bottom of the shirts to the color.

There are several things you can do to fit more in your suitcase, but these are the few tips that help me.  Do you have any packing tips or tips to fit more in your carry-on suitcase?
