I can’t tell you how much fun we have had being part of the Power Up & Read Scholastic Summer Reading Challenge. My girls have benefited so much from the program; it’s helped to motivate them to continue reading during the summer and even have fun with it. We’ve done several things to help keep reading fun for the girls! One of their favorites was the reading under the stars night we did as a family.
It’s so important to keep kids reading this summer, but it’s equally as important to continue the momentum into the school year! So if you’re not already part of the summer reading challenge, it’s not too late to get your kids reading, logging and earning with the Scholastic Summer Reading Challenge.
Read, Log, and Earn with Scholastic Summer Reading Challenge
We got the reading under the stars idea from last year’s Scholastic Reading challenge! I think it’s awesome my girls remember certain things they did last year that helped make reading fun and we were able to incorporate them into this year’s challenge.
5 of our favorite summer reading books & 5-word review from kids:
- The Invention of Huge Cabret – Adventurous, fun & attention grabbing story. (Vayda LOVES this book)
- Hunger Games – Addicting book with great plot. (Catie LOVES this book)
- The Magic School Bus – Riding bus & school sound fun (Mattie)
- Extreme Experiments – OMG, the BEST book EVER! (Vayda)
- David Goes To School – Crazy boy makes me smile. (Mattie)
I let the kids choose their favorite book and I’d have to say I agree with them because they are all fun, engaging and got my kids reading for the summer. Even my youngest Mattie was picking up books that I had already read to her and trying to read them to me. Of course, she sorta made up her own story, but she was excited and the stories were so much fun when she told them, lol.
Since summer reading is crucial I’m thankful there are programs out there for us to get our kids involved in to keep them motivated to read all summer long. My kids started back to school on the 12th of August and Vayda lucked out that her teacher from last year decided to move up a grade this year. We are super excited because she is an amazing teacher who has helped Vayda in so many different ways and one of the things my daughter’s teacher noticed right away was that she improved her reading skills over the summer! Not only did that help make this mommy feel good, but it helped put a little extra spring in my daughters step and her now fully understands the importance of summer time reading.
Remember the cool thing about the Scholastic Summer Reading Challenge is that kids are reading in hopes to break last year’s world record of 304,749,681 minutes! So far we’re at 208,058,321 minutes read, which means we need your kids to jump in and help us break last year’s world record. It’s not too late to join in the fun and be part of this AWESOME summer reading challenge!

This is awesome. We have a similar program at my local library. It is so amazing to see the kids reading, and enjoying it so wholeheartedly.
This is such a great idea and program! I can’t wait to do thus with my girls when they get a little older!
