There are some people who really know how to decorate a Christmas tree to give it that “wow” factor. These trees make all others pale in comparison. How do they do it?
For starters, they have a plan and don’t just throw decorations up and call it a day. There is a method that will get stunning results. It doesn’t take a degree in interior decorating to know how to do it. One thing that these people don’t do is work without a strategy or go freehand on the decorating.
With the right steps in place, you can also have a Christmas tree that is a pleasure to look at and will impress your guests.
1 – Personalize it
Any Christmas decorations should show your personality and what you and your family are all about. This especially goes for the tree. This is the centerpiece of the holiday and is the best opportunity to let your style and interests shine through.
Make sure the decorations like the ornaments or the ribbons speak to who you are. For instance, the ornaments should mainly be about your interests. If you are a football fan in Pittsburgh then a Steelers ornament is a must-have item on the tree. Any type of hobby makes for personalized decorations, too. If fishing is your thing then something that shows off is a good idea.
And a hobby that is crafting or creative offers a great chance to create something unique. Crossstitch fans can make a wide variety of interesting ornaments. And somebody who works with metals can forge something up that is not a run-of-the-mill ornament.
2 – Hang the lights first
A Christmas tree without lights is lacking spirit in a big way. To really make the tree come to life it takes a few different types of lights. And they should be the first thing to go up so the ribbons and ornaments don’t get in the way of their placement.
When the lights are placed toward the inside of the tree it has a much more dramatic effect. It creates shadows and a mood that delights when you see them flicker. You should start at the base of the tree and work your way up to get the most even coverage.
Wind the lights around the tree so it is light from all sides and angles. Then, when the lights are all the way to the top start the process again with another strand. This is a good opportunity to use a different style to really make the tree pop. if you used white lights first, then the second strand can be different colors.
3 – Add the ribbons or garlands
Try to avoid a gaudy or busy-looking tree by going easy on the ribbons and garlands. Use two different styles to give the tree some vibrancy. A good idea is to use a nice ribbon with a little flash and a plainer garland that hangs gently from the branches.
