Tips To Keep Kids Happy and Healthy During The School Year

by Jenn Brockman

pediasure sponsored postAs parents, we want to keep our kids happy and healthy all year-long, but once they’re back in school the schedules change, time changes, day get shorter, and it just seems like we have to rush to get everything done.  Plus, we have to find a way to fit family time, cleaning the house, laundry, blah-blah, and you know the story.  There is too much to do, and not enough time to do it, and I don’t want to miss out on any Fridgworthy Moments.  I think that’s what I like most about summer, the kids are home, and this is the first time in my life I have not worked.  The fact that I get to be home with the kids for the Fridgworthy Moments is such a blessing.  I honestly didn’t think it would ever happen, and now that I’m able to I think I’m trying to make up for lost time.

Like most parents, there is one thing in the world that matters more than anything – my family.  I would do anything for them, love them more than life itself, and want them to be happy and healthy.  I want my children to have the best possible childhood, because growing up stinks.  They have the rest of their life to be a grown up, now I want them to have fun, get good grades, act crazy, be creative, use that imagination of theirs, make me smile, and smile everyday because they’re happy.

I honestly miss the summer, I loved the kids being home with me.  We had an awesome summer, but now it’s back to the school day routine.  Have you ever thought about everything your child does in a day once they start going to school?  My kids leave the house at 7:30 am, get home at 4pm, have one hour to goof off before it’s homework time, do their homework, do their daily chore, take showers, eat dinner, get ready for bed.  WOW, it’s seriously like they have a job, because that’s exactly what I did when I was working at the bank,.  Well, I didn’t go sit in a classroom, which in my opinion takes more out of you, because it’s not easy to use your brain for learning all day.  They are like mini grown ups, and don’t get me started on how early I think they are learning stuff.  Oh, or the fact that summer has been getting shorter and shorter.

Now, don’t get me wrong.  I’m not complaining, I just know my children are responsible for a lot during the day.  It’s why I want to do everything I can to make their time off as enjoyable as possible, feed them nutritious meals, get them outside and moving, and keep them happy and healthy.

Here are a few things you can do to keep kids healthy during the school year.

  • Wash hands – It’s that time of year again.  We should be teaching our children to wash their hands all year, but this time of year it’s especially important.  Making it a habit from a young age helps a lot when they get older.  You can also let them carry hand sanitizer in their backpack to use when they cannot wash their hands.
  • Sharing isn’t caring – My girls LOVE to hug and touch everyone, and it’s even worse when they are at school with their other friends who love to hug and touch.  Teaching your child not to share their food and drinks with friends at school can help keep them healthy, because we don’t want them to share germs too.
  • Keep them home – If your child is sick, running a fever, or you can tell they are not feeling well, it’s a good idea to keep them home from school.  It never fails one child gets sick, and it works
  • Playtime – Whether the kids go outside and ride their bikes, or build something crazy out of a cardboard box.  It’s better than letting them veg out in front of the TV.
  • Active – I wish I had just a little of the energy my kids do, lol.  Can you imagine everything we would get done in a day.  Kids need to be active, get out and release some of that energy.
  • Sleep – Sleep is extremely important, and I’m sure you know how it feels to lack sleep as an adult.  Imagine sitting in a classroom for hours trying to focus, pay attention, and learn.  It’s not easy for us, and certainly can be hard for them.
  • Schedule Family Time – It’s hard when everyone is busy, but family time is important.  It doesn’t matter what you do, as long as you’re all together, enjoying your family time. We do our best to have family movie night once a week, and Sunday evening while it’s still warm we try to have a BBQ.
  • Promote creativity – My kids love art, crafts, being creative and have wild imaginations.  I love it, they will turn a box into a castle, and if it’s big enough, they’ll turn it into an apartment for themselves, lol.  They make me pictures all the time, each and every one of them are Fridgworthy Moments.  I love my children, and those Fridgeworthy moments hold a special place in my heart.  Did you know PediaSure helps moms to support these moments?
  • Make healthy choices easier – We already know cooking a healthy meal for our families is important.  How are you making healthy choices easier for your family?  Something I do is stock up on fruits and veggies, my kids love, and leave the candy, chips, and sodas on the shelves.  Ninety percent of the time when my kids ask for a snack, it’s grapes, carrots, apple, broccoli, etc.  Which not only makes eating healthy easier, they really don’t have a choice, lol. PediaSure is another great option to help give your children all the good stuff their little bodies and minds need to create fun Fridgeworthy Moments for us.

When we started using PediSure it was for our son who has cerebral palsy, and it was to help him gain weight, but I also learned it’s good for our other children as well.  Yes, it’s also good for kids who are growing, it provides them with advanced nutrition that is clinically proven to promote growth and development.

PediaSure taste great so the kids love it, and comes in several different flavors too.

My kids color or draw me at least a picture a day. I recently cleaned off my refrigerator to make room for all the new ones they were coming.  I have this tub I keep all the picture they draw me, and WOW it’s getting full – there has been a lot of Fridgworthy Moments in our house.  I honestly didn’t realize how many until I opened the tub to put more in there, I stopped to look at some of them, and it always makes me cry.  I am really having a hard time with this whole kid growing up deal.  I can’t stop them from growing up, but I can do my best to be sure they have everything they need to keep their minds fueled, be happy and healthy so  happy and healthy because I want as many Fridgworthy Moments.

Happy KidsMattie came in my office and printed out a new picture, she’s coloring it special for me, but I cannot see it until she is finished.  It’s going to take her a LONG, LONG, LONG time, because she wants to make it beautiful because she loves me.  See, those are the Fridgeworthy Moments I will remember forever and ever! I still have many years of Fridgworthy Moments left, and I want to remember them all.
