What Bathroom Items Can Be Recycled & Tips To Get Started

by Jenn Brockman

Do you and your family recycle?  Chances are many of you are recycling something, but what about your bathroom?  Have you ever thought about ways to start recycling in the bathroom, or noticed all the items you can recycle?  According to CareToRecycle.com 22% of Americans have never thought about recycling in the bathroom, and until recently I was one of those Americans. Which is why I jumped at the chance to join The Motherhood and Care To Recycle to bring you this sponsored post about what bathroom items can be recycled and a few tips to get you started.

We started recycling several years ago, and it was because of my kids we started.  They learned about it at school, and made such a fuss at home we slowly started pulling together as a family and making a difference, but my children are the leaders on this project, even today.  They take their job to make the earthy a happier, cleaner, greener place seriously, and I respect them for it.  I respect them for coming home and demanding we make a change because of something they learned at school.   Kids are smart; there are so many things adults can learn from them if you allow them to teach you.

Ways to start recycling in the bathroom never crossed my mind, fewer things to get me started or make recycling easier.  The bathroom was like a separate place, where I failed to pay attention to all the items we can recycle.  Once I hear the words recycle and bathroom in the same sentence I started thinking about all the things in the bathroom that can be tossed into the recycling bin and not the trash.  Gosh, I’m glad I realized before the recycling police, my kids wouldn’t let me hear the end of it had they noticed first, lol.

If you’re not currently recycling in your bathroom here are a few ways to get started, and items that to be recycled.

  • Put someone in charge – If you want the job done, and you want it done right put one of the kids in change.  We put Vayda in charge, and WOW, thank goodness she isn’t old enough to be someone’s boss, lol. Once my children started learning about recycling in school, and the impact it has on the earth they stay up with it well. Like many other schools, the children help their teacher recycle, which helps it become a habit at school and they bring it home.
  • Place a recycling bin in the bathroom – If you put a recycling bin the in the bathroom it will make things easier, and help everyone remember
  • Toilet paper rolls – I don’t know how many of these I have thrown away in my life, and the time I could have recycled.
  • Bathroom Towels – Do you toss your bathroom towels when they get old or do something else with them?  Here are a few things you can do with them if you’ve tossed: 1) Donate them to your local animal shelter.  We take some to our animal shelter now and then, and they are very appreciative.  2) Cut them and use them as cleaning rags. 3) Upcycle if you’re creative I’m sure you can come up with something AWESOME!
  • Plastic bottles – All those plastic bottles in the bathroom, they can be recycled.  The plastic bottles in your bathroom, and not tossing them in the trash, recycle them.  Most bottles in the bathroom are made from #1 (PET) or #2 (HDPE), which is the same as your milk jugs and water bottles.
  • Medication containers – You can recycle some medicine containers.  You’ll need to look at the bottom of your pill bottle for #1, #3 or #5 plastics and check with your recycling center.
  • Cotton balls & toilet paper– I know you probably don’t want to recycle your cotton balls, but what about the plastic wrap you typically throw in the trash.  I had no ideas the plastic wrap often used on toilet paper, and cotton balls are often made from plastic.  Most grocery and retail stores have bins you can often use.
  • Tissue Box – It’s that time of year, and I don’t know about you, but I have tissue in almost every room in the house.  I cannot believe it, but I just now realized I have tossed the one is my bathroom for years, and the tissue boxes in the other rooms we recycle.
