Getting out and about with your toddler is always going to be a good thing to add to your day’s agenda. Whether it’s a simple walk around the block or an adventurous hike in the mountains, going on walks with your little one is a great way to get in your exercise and make some great memories together.
So what kinds of things do you need for a walk with your toddler? Here are some of the things I like to consider when heading out for a walk.
A Comfy Baby Carrier
Despite all of your good intentions to get your toddler to walk, after a short period of time, they will want to be carried. Save your arms and bring along a baby carrier. I recommend a toddler carrier that is comfortable for both you and your child. This will ensure that everyone stays happy throughout the duration of your walk. Trust me, you’ll be happy you brought it along!
Plenty of Snacks
Almost as inevitable as having to carry your child is them asking for a snack about every two minutes. Be sure to bring food along with you on your walk. Easy things like crackers, fruit leather, and granola bars are always crowd-pleasers.
You might also consider bringing along a water bottle for your little one. Often the request for a snack is followed up by a request for a drink, so stay ahead of the game and be prepared.
The Right Clothing
You’ll want to be sure to take the weather into consideration for your walk, as well. If it’s cold out, make sure you’re both dressed in long sleeves and layers. Put a hat and some mittens on your little one. If it’s warm out, dress in lightweight clothing, especially if you opt for the baby carrier!
Some Easy Walking Games
Depending on how old your child is, they might be down for some easy walking games. Things like I Spy, The Alphabet Game, and Colors are all fun and easy options for walking games. They’ll keep your toddler occupied and give them a fun opportunity to explore and consider the nature around them.
An End Destination
And last but not least, you’ll want to have an end destination in mind for your walk. Wandering aimlessly might be fun without a child, but when you’re exploring and walking with your little one, have a place in mind that you’re walking to. It could be a nearby park, it could be the end of the trail, it could even just be the end of your street. If you’re going to be far from home, be sure to tell someone where you’re going and when you expect to be back!
Making fun for yourself and your toddler doesn’t have to be complicated or expensive. Going on walks is a great way to get out and make some fun memories together. So grab all of the essentials and get ready for a great walk together with your little one!
