What to Bring to a Missionary Farewell Party

by Jenn

Whether it’s someone in your ward or neighborhood or it’s a family member or friend, a missionary farewell party is a huge deal for anyone getting ready to start their two years or eighteen months of service.

You may find yourself wondering what you should bring to a missionary farewell party. We get it! You want it to be helpful and meaningful. There’s just something special about landing on that perfect item to bring with you that gets you even more excited for the party.

A Yummy Treat

Chat with the person hosting the missionary farewell party to see if there’s any food you can bring. Chances are they’ve already planned out some sort of menu, but perhaps some cupcakes are needed, or maybe some lemonade. See what might still be needed and how much you should bring. It’s sure to be a hit!

A Flag

Whether the future missionary is jetting off to a foreign country or they’re staying stateside, a great item to bring with you to the missionary farewell party is a flag. It will make for an awesome decoration and photo op for the other party guests and will be something that will hold significance for the missionary for the rest of their life.

A Meaningful Gift

Another great option is to bring a meaningful gift for the missionary to be. There are tons of options to choose from when it comes to gifts for missionaries, making it easy to find something that they’ll love.

You could get them a fresh set of scriptures to bring along with them, or some quality scripture marking pencils. If it’s an elder taking off for his mission, get him a fresh tie. If it’s a sister, a cute skirt is a perfect way to go. A fresh, missionary-themed journal is another great option, making it easy for them to record their thoughts and experiences while on their mission.

A Letter with Mission Advice

If you yourself served an LDS mission, a wonderful thing to bring to a missionary farewell party would be a letter. Whether written or types, sharing your experiences and advice for the missionary-to-be is going to be a priceless gift. Assure them that they are called by the Lord, to listen to the promptings of the spirit, to focus on service, to be patient with their companions. Share some of your favorite scriptures. Assure them that they will do great things. It can serve as comfort as they get ready to embark on their adventure.

So as you get ready to head out to a mission farewell party, whether it be for a family member or for a friend, consider what you can bring to make the event a little more meaningful and memorable.
