Missoni is a high-end Italian fashion brand based in Varese, Italy. Most known for their knitwear collections, they were founded by Ottavio and Rosita Missoni in 1953. The Missoni brand is a family business that continues to break molds in the fashion world to this day. Although the Missoni’s passed on their brand to their three children in 1996, the quality of the brand has only been advanced by new, fresh eyes.
History of Missoni
When the Missoni’s found their business in Gallarate, Italy in 1953 it started as a little knitwear workshop. After they presented their first collection in Milan in 1958, the business grew with the help of fashion editor Anna Piaggi and French Stylist Emmanuelle Khanh.
In April 1967, Rosita appeared with her models at the Pitti Palace in Florence. She asked her models to remove their bras because they were the wrong color. Although the models wore shirts, the fabric appeared see-through under the lights. Missoni wasn’t invited back the following year, but the press coverage they got due to that event helped their business.
With the revenue they received, they were able to build a factory in Sumirago in 1969. Around that time, Diana Vreeland, editor of Vogue, recommended the brand in their magazine.
The brand reached its peak in the 1970s (although the brand is still going strong. This was also the time that both founders were losing interest in fashion. Ottavio decided to focus on making tapestries, and Rosita handed over her business to Angela, her daughter, in 1998.
Currently, Missoni sits with the fashion elite on locations like Rue Saint Honore, along with Chanel and Dior. This designer label includes Missoni Sport, which was discontinued in 2002 and replaced with the less expensive Marzotto line.
Missoni is also known for its home furnishings and perfume. Their most recent venture was in the form of hotels, in which 30 have opened since 2012. Missoni is now creating a 249 unit real estate complex in Miami, Florida which is set to open at the end of 2020.
