Completing our respective morning routines in a timely manner and making it to the office with time to spare seem like impossible feats for those of us who are chronically tardy. Not only can frequent tardiness prove frustrating on a personal level, it’s unlikely to do you any favors with your employer, either. So, if you habitually report to work late, it’s in everyone’s best interest that you reign things in – and what better way to start than by identifying the root cause(s) of your lateness?
Your Sleep Habits Leave Something to be Desired
It isn’t hard to see why poor sleep habits and habitual tardiness go hand-in-hand. After all, if you fail to get a sufficient amount of sleep, it’s only natural that you’d have trouble getting out of bed and prepping for the day ahead. Unfortunately, despite being very much aware of this, many of us continue to keep inconsistent, unhealthy sleep schedules.
If not getting enough sleep has impeded your ability to arrive at work on time, you’d do well to get your sleep habits under control. Among other things, this will entail assigning yourself a bedtime that allows for at least seven to eight hours of sleep and sticking to it. This will help ensure that you’re well-rested and have plenty of energy with which to tackle your morning routine.
You’ll also need to develop a pre-bedtime routine. Such routines are particularly important for people who have trouble getting their brains in the mood for sleep. A good nighttime routine entails shutting off any screens 30 minutes to a full hour before your newly-designated bedtime and engaging in activities designed to relax the mind. Meditation, deep breathing exercises and reading are just a few examples of such activities.
For best results, adhere to your new bedtime on weekends, as well as weekdays. This will help your mind and body become acclimated to a consistent sleep schedule much sooner. Once you’ve gotten used to your new routine, however, changing things up on weekends and vacations should generally be okay.
Your Time Management Needs Work
If your time management leaves something to be desired, getting through a basic morning routine in a timely manner is liable to prove challenging – but by no means impossible. To start with, make sure that you’re getting up early enough to comfortably undertake your daily grooming rituals, eat breakfast and tackle your commute. However, if you’re getting up with plenty of time to spare but are still unable to get to work on time, you may need to take some additional measures.
For one thing, you should give yourself an appropriate amount of time to complete each morning task. You Live Too Far Away from Work

So, if you’re routinely inconvenienced by lengthy commute times, you should consider relocating to a residence that’s closer to your place of business.
Many people who work in large cities tend to live far outside of these areas as a money-saving measure. And while the desire to keep one’s living expenses in check is certainly understandable, saving money may not be worth the many inconveniences associated with long commutes. So, if doing so is financially feasible, give some serious thought to getting a place that’s a great deal closer to where you work.
Few things are more stressful and frustrating than being unable to arrive at work on time. In addition to making us feel inadequate in the face of poor time management, habitual tardiness also stands to place our continued employment in jeopardy. While some employers are fairly lenient with regard to tardiness, others regard it as an outright affront to proper workplace behavior.
