Did you have a particular song growing up? You know that song that comes on and you still know the words, dance around, or even stop for a second and remember way back when? I sure hope you do! Not only are the memories great but you are invited to share individual songs that make you remember a special moment, memory and feeling about your mom or daughter(s) for the De Tal Madre, Tal Hija social media campaign presented by Clorox. You can learn more about this awesome campaign (and what you could win!) at the end of this post.
Growing up my brother was crazy about Selena, but who wasn’t I mean really. The other day my brother and I jumped into his truck and Selena came on! I looked at my brother and for a moment I saw my brother as that pesky little brat that was always on my last nerve in the back of my mom’s car singing and dancing to any Selena song that he caught on the radio.
I have good and bad memories, mostly good and I think it’s safe to say I don’t remember anything about what was on the floor, whether my room was clean, or if my mom did the dishes that day. All I remember is being a lucky kid! I had it all, the best parents, horses, lived in the country and spent a lot of time jamming out with everyone!
De Tal Madre, Tal Hija The Memories & Songs Will Always Live On
Just going to the grocery store was a 45-minute trip which left plenty of time for singing with mom in the car and building memories we will both have forever. I have always loved music. When I was younger I was happy as long as I had my Walkman (yes, I’m old) and my horse. I have several songs that I hold close to my heart because they remind me of a few ladies who are very special to me. Okay, I’ll tell you! First is my mother, I can think of so many different songs that remind me of her but nothing hits home like “Lean On Me” I still smile every time I think about it.

I grew up singing this song with my mom, knew every word, or I thought I did lol. When I was about 10 or 11 I got into my very first disagreement with my mom, I was right, she was wrong and I wasn’t going to budge. I guess my mom was getting a little tired of my attitude and decided to bring me down a notch or two by telling me I was wrong about something. She tried saying the song’s name was “Lean On Me,” not “Stand on Me.” Of course, I didn’t believe her, why had she never said anything! I argued with her a bit; it wasn’t until the words “Stand on Me” rolled off my tongue that I realized she was right, and I was wrong. Not only was I wrong, but “Stand On Me?” Seriously, I was that stubborn and hardheaded that I didn’t stop to listen to what I was saying. It’s been 20 years, and she still will not let me live that down.
I love thinking back to my childhood and almost every song I listened to as a child has a memory tied to it, even the newer songs I listen to often have some memory tied to it. Now I get to help my kids build memories, and I love listening to them singing, it still blows me away how quickly they can pick up a song. The power of a young mind is incredible! The girls and I sing all sorts of songs, but they each have a song that will always and forever remind me of them, spending time with them, and watching them grow up. They know every word to the song, and I don’t think they will ever forget it.

Mattie’s jam is “For The Longest Time” I still can’t believe how quick she learned that song. I remember it came on the radio, she wanted to me play it again so I bought the song and downloaded it on my phone. Before I knew it she was singing it around the house, and nailing it too! I still have a recording of her signing it as my ringtone.
Vayda loved to jam out too and knew every word to “Bartender”, I still remember her jamming out like she was a big girl with her darn juice mustache! I’ll never forget how cute she was trying to act like a big girl, singing with me, and not realizing she had a darn red mustache lol. I love my kids.
And it doesn’t matter how old my Catie Lou gets I’ll always remember her as that little girl always humming or singing a Hanna Montana song everywhere she went. Some things will never change and I refuse to stop and realize just how old she’s getting lol.
