Traveling with a large family can be a bit of a task, especially when you try to smash two adults, four children (one of which is in a wheelchair) and all their bags into a vehicle. It sure does make one exciting trip. The kids fight the entire time we are in the car, nobody is comfortable, everyone wants what the other kids have and my husband and me, well, we go crazy lol. If we had to vacation this way all the time we probably wouldn’t take many vacations because my husband and I would have lost our sanity by now. Thankfully, for large families like ours, there are other options that aren’t expensive like RVing.
Yes, RVing is our preferred way to travel, especially when we travel with the kids. There are so many reasons to Go RVing and hit the road for a good old family vacation. Here are a few of my favorite reasons why RVing is great for a large family.
Fewer stops
Okay, when you have children this one is huge! Stopping less means you can get a little further, right? If you travel with kids you know stopping for bathroom breaks happens just about every time you pass a store. When you travel by RV you can easily stop for bathroom breaks without unloading everyone!
More room to breathe/less stress for Mom and Dad
There is a TON more room in an RV than in your other vehicles! This means everyone can bring along what they need to stay entertained on the trip and not bump elbows trying to use them. The kids fight less when they have room to play, color, watch movies and just about anything else they want to do.
Plus, we can’t forget about all the storage and there is a ton more storage in an RV. Which of course means Mom can bring everything she needs to keep everyone happy! Everything can be kept nice and neat underneath so it doesn’t take up space where the family will be.
It’s less expensive
Taking an RV trip is often less expensive than the alternative of hotel rooms every night for 6 people, stopping to eat, and all the other little costs that add up along the way. When you go RVing you don’t have to pay for an expensive hotel, you can bring your own food, the kids can bring plenty of entertainment and the activities we normally take part in when RVing are less expensive, too.
Perfect for my special needs son
My son has cerebral palsy and is in a wheelchair. The bigger he gets, the harder it is for us to take road trips because there just isn’t enough room in the vehicle for everything and everyone. We started RVing a few years back when he was younger and just fell in love with how easy everything was. The kids didn’t complain, they had room, even my son was able to do his own thing without worrying about his sisters elbowing him or listening to them bicker lol. Poor guy, the only boy with three sisters. RVing is an awesome choice if you have a loved one who is in a wheelchair.
Camping in style
I like camping in just a tent and sleeping bag but it’s not something I will do for more than one maybe two nights with my kids. They start complaining, get uncomfortable, hot, need showers, etc. Well traveling in an RV means you get to camp with all the modern conveniences – shower, bathroom, water, kitchen, AC, and more.
There is enough room to bring cousins along too
My kids love it when they can travel with their cousins which never happens if we travel without the RV. There isn’t enough room for our family much less adding more kids to the mix. When we take our family vacation in an RV, the kids can invite their cousins along for some fun. Bringing cousins along for the ride honestly makes the trip more enjoyable for Mom and Dad, too, because the kids have more people to play with.
Quality time with the family makes awesome memories
My favorite reason for traveling in an RV with my kids is the memories! We have taken many road trips in the car and they were miserable. Yes, I have memories, but not like I do when we vacation in an RV. Everyone is more comfortable, happy and the stops along the way are always more fun.
You see and do more along the way
One of my personal favorite things about RVing as a large family is that you get to see and do more along the way. You can stop for a night on your way to your destination, and stay 2 nights or a week once you arrive. It’s all up to you and how you decide to get there!
Outdoor activities are great for bonding with the family
I love being outdoors with Mother Nature and RVing with our large family of six is the way to go. Not just because of the room and comfort but because the activities are awesome and have been an incredible way for us to bond.
Fishing is a family favorite because it’s something that my special needs son can take part in without any problems. This is him catching his first fish of the season last year, he was so excited.
Variety of RVs
There are several assorted styles and sizes of RVs and you can pick the size and style that fits the needs of your family best – from a Conventional Travel Trailer to a Type A Motorhome. You’ll even find specialty RVs such as horse trailers, RVs for the disabled, and ice fish houses.
Have you taken your family RVing? If so where did you go and what did you and your family enjoy most about your vacation.
