5 Things To Consider Before Buying a Boat to Discover Boating

by Jenn Brockman

Being on the water is one of the most relaxing, peaceful, calm and even epic, way to bond with the family.

I have so many memories on the water, I loved relaxing in the boat or getting a little wild on the jet skis.  Gosh, that was so much fun, but what I remember most is the sound of the water.  There is nothing more calming that listening to the water in the warm sun beating down on you.  I also remember learning to kneeboard, lol.  Gosh, that was an experience.  My friends thought they would be funny and mess with me since I didn’t know what I was doing.  I tried so darn hard to pull myself on the knee board, FOR TWO HOURS.  You better believe my arms felt like noodles, but I finally did it, only to find out when I got back on the boat that they were speeding up and slowing down so it would be difficult for me to get up on the kneeboard, lol.  The few times that I did, they would speed up, let’s just say I didn’t get up until they were done having their fun lol.

Sure it was a little rude of them, but I didn’t have the energy to punch them when I got on the boat and quickly got over it and today I get to share that story with you.  Those were good times, with some good friends.  We always went up to Lake Navajo, which sits on the Colorado and New Mexico border.

Oh, I also remember one year, late in the summer my friend Jeremy thought he would be funny and act like a dork only to drop his brand new expensive Oakley sunglasses off the side of the boat.  It was close to shore, we looked for them a bit, but never found them.  Well, we didn’t find them that trip, but we did the following spring.  The lake doesn’t get super full until the snow on the mountains melt since we went before all the snow in Colorado melted the water was lohiw, and I’ll be darned if we don’t pull up to our spot and find his darn Oakley sunglasses in perfect condition.  He just cleaned them up a bit and never hung is face over the side of the boat again, lol.

We’re not planning on getting another boat until next summer, which means we have to go this whole summer focused on next summer with a lake only about 15 minutes away?  Doesn’t sound fair, does it?  I don’t think so, but we don’t have a place to keep all these vehicles and trailers until we get our land and house, and they are just now starting on the shore.  By the time it’s all said and done summer will be gone, but there is an alternative.  Do you know what that is?  It’s Discover Boating

  • Choosing the right boat for your lifestyle – Discover Boating has an awesome Boat Selector Tool that allows you to get an excellent feel for the size of boat you want based on home many people you’ll typically have on the boat, how long you plan on keeping your boat, etc. so you can discover which boat will fit your lifestyle best.  It’s good to start dreaming right!  Dreams turn into goals and if you are like me you race after your goals.
  • Research – Before buying a boat be sure to do your research, it’s a big purchase, and you want to make sure you end up with a boat you and your family can live with.  You can opt for speed boat, fishing boat or even canal boats for sale depending on your location and needs
  • Budget – Before going to purchase a boat make sure you have considered all expenses involved so you can budget the payment unless of course, you are lucky enough to pay cash for such an excellent item.  However, even if you can avoid payments on the boat, you’ll still want to take into total consideration amount spent on the boat, insurance, upkeep, where to purchase, whether or not to go with a new boat or settle for a used boat.  You can get a good idea how much boat parts and maintenance usually costs by visiting Marine Depot.
  • Rent a boat – Before buying a boat be sure you spend the day out on one with the family so you get a feel for what it will be like out on the boat with all those people to make sure the boat is going to be big enough for everyone.  You might find you want a little extra room.  Since I know you likely wouldn’t purchase a truck or car before testing driving it, I’m going to assume you’ll want to spend some time out on the water.
  • Get the kids involved – My kids love the water and want to be out on the lake probably more than my husband and me so it only makes sense that they take a youth boating program like the one they offer at Discover Boating.  I want my kids to be comfortable and get some training from a professional before taking them out on the water.  You can learn more about the You Boating Programs at DiscoverBoating.com.

Spending time on a boat alone is one of the most peaceful things one can do.  Just sit back relax, listen to the wildlife, other boaters and the sound of the water beneath you and it can also be one of the best ways to spend time with your loved ones.  There will be plenty of smiles, laughs, and memories to carry with you for the rest of your life; they will outlast your boat.  Which is the reason to get a boat, right?  Enjoy today and build memories with family and friends for tomorrow.
