See every 6 weeks Kronos publishes a new episode in their 1 in one hundred million web series. These episodes celebrate individuals who have character, commitment, and passion in the workforce. As you may know, every job plays a huge part in our way of life – Major in the National Guard, Truck Drivers, Zookeepers, Desk Agent, Serves and more. They all play a huge part in our way of life, and I think it’s fabulous that Kronos is celebrating them. The 20th episode is about Briana Francisco who’s a Quality Assurance Lab Technician with Deschutes Brewery.

Briana started drinking craft beer during college where she would opt for a Guinness or Amber, just something different than the traditional beer. She would get teased by her friends; they would call it a “boy” beer, which ended up triggering something. From that point, she wanted to try new and different things and even learn to craft homebrew, styles and compare them.
After Briana graduated from the University of Minnesota, Duluth with a degree in biology and minor in chemistry and PHY she started in a lab malting facility located in Minnesota. This is where they malt barley that is put into the beer. After looking around, Briana found out that she has qualified for a job at one of her favorite breweries located inBend, Oregon. Believe it or not, she got the job and moved to Oregon without knowing anyone there, but she now calls Bend Oregan and Deschutes home.
You might be thinking she has the coolest job EVER! I mean she gets to try beer all day right/ Wrong, Briana is part of a sensory panel consists of 10 to 20 people who sit down each day and taste each process. She does the chemical analysis of beer from the starting point until it’s finished. Yes, wort right out of the kettle, fermentation process, conditioning and then bottle and keg.
I think I agree with Briana, “It’s fun science.” She gets to analyze alcohol by volume, pH, Plato, IBUs, color, Specific Gravity, and more.
That’s not all Briana does; she is also in charge of the GC – Mass Spectrometer, is another tool used for analysis. It helps to separate and quantify different components of the beer. Ther tool for analysis that helps separate and quantify all the various elements of the beer. They use this info to help with sensory, recipe creation or changes, barrel blending, and age testing the beer to make sure they are only putting the “best damn tasty craft beer out there” that they can. As you can imagine with social media quality assurance is more important than ever. All it takes is one wrong comment for a company to begin to get a bad image. While this job might sound fun, one needs to love science as much as they love crafted beer.
