12 Things To Consider Before Buying a New Toaster

by Jenn Brockman

Do you know I have had the same crappy toaster since I moved out of my moms house? I’ve thought about buying a new toaster several times, but I always forget until I pull out the toaster to make breakfast for the family. Then it hits me, CRAP! One day I’ll get me a good toaster, one that doesn’t over or under toast, maybe even one that toasts the whole piece of bread and doesn’t leave the top of the bread untoasted because the toaster pockets are not big enough, lol.

You think I’m kidding, but I’m not! After using my antique toaster that probably belong to my great-grandmother, I have put a lot of thought into things people should consider before running out and purchasing a toaster.

12 Things To Consider Before Buying a New Toaster

Here are a few things to consider before purchasing your next toaster.

  • Storage – Where will you be keeping your toaster? Even if you have a large family, if you’re lacking storage space purchasing a toaster with two toasting carriages rather than four might be something you consider. Toaster with only two toasting carriages is typically quite a bit smaller than those with four carriages.

  • Size – Of course for my family, I need a toaster that toasts at last four slices of bread.  However, if you don’t have a large family, you might be able to pull it off with a smaller toaster that takes up less room.
  • Browning control – For some reason, everyone likes their toast browned differently, so the variable browning control is an important feature when selecting a toaster. The last thing I want is my toast super dark like my husband. I like my toast lightly toasted, so it has a crispy, lightly browned outside, and the breads warm and soft inside. YUMMY!
  • Avoid burning fingers – A high lift facility like the Breville 2 and 4 Slice Toaster’s so you don’t burn your fingers.
  • Deep bread carriages – There is no way I’ll ever have a toaster without deep bread carriage after using my antique toaster for so long. If the bread is too large, the tops poke out and don’t seem to get toasted. Deep bread carriages are a necessity for the larger slices of bread.
  • Variable width bread slots – Since bread comes in all sorts of different widths, variable width bread slots for toasting thick or thin slices of bread is an awesome feature.
  • View your toast’s progress – Wouldn’t it be awesome to have a toaster with a look and left the facility to view your toast’s progress without having to cancel the cycle? I honestly didn’t even know a toaster could do such a thing, but the Breville 2 and 4 Slice Toasters most certainly can.
  • Multi-function – Defrost, mid-cycle cancel, and reheat functions would be awesome features. I’m falling head over heels for the Breville 2 and 4 Slice Toaster because it has defrost, reheat and even mid-cycle cancel functions! Does it get any better?
  • Function identification – An excellent added feature would be control buttons for easy function identification, like the red illuminated control buttons on the Breville 2 and 4 Slice Toasters.
  • Cleaning – We all have to clean up our mess that involves getting all those darn crumbs out of our toaster. Rather than flipping it upside down and banging on the bottom to get the crumbs out I want a removable crumb tray to make my life easier. Plus it will save my toaster a lot of falls into the trash can since I currently hold my antique of a toaster over the trash and bag on the bottom to get out all the crumbs.
  • Safety – The last thing we want to worry about, especially with kids is a toaster without non-slip feet. I need a toaster that isn’t going to slip and slide around on my counter-top
  • Style – Of course, style matters. I need a toaster that is going to match my newly remodeled kitchen, which brings me to the Breville toasters. They are not only functional but would look sharp in my kitchen.
