Six Summer Sun Safety Tips for your Skin

by Jenn Brockman

I participated in an influencer activation on behalf of Influence Central for Neutrogena.  I received samples to facilitate my review and a promotional item to thank me for my participation.

I live in southern New Mexico, summers are long and HOT and if you’re not prepared the sun can be horrible on your skin.

Here are a few summer sun safety tips for both adults and children.

1.) Protecting your skin from the sun is a top priority.

The most important thing you can do for your skin and your health is make protecting it from the hot summer sun top priority.   It’s scary to think one in every five Americans develop skin cancer, and only 20% use SPF daily.

I think it’s safe to say we practice setting a good example for our children, so they learn to wear sunscreen anytime they head outdoors and make it a top priority.  Hopefully, we can help decrease the number of people who develop skin cancer by educating ourselves, family, friends, and most importantly our children.

2.) Keep skin hydrated & give skin with eczema extra attention

My son has eczema, and extra attention is needed all year, but especially during the summer months.  Give of Neutrogena’s Sun products were recently awarded the National Eczema Association’s Seal of Acceptance.  Since it’s important to protect your skin from the sun as well as use a product that helps Eczema we have started using Neutrogena products.

3.) Stay hydrated

As always make sure to drink plenty of water it’s good for just about everything, including your skin.

4.) Think twice about that sexy tan

Sure a tan looks fabulous but remember taking care of your skin not only helps keep your skin looking healthy longer, but it’s also better to go without that tan than risk getting skin cancer.  When it comes to my children, ANYTHING I can do to reduce their chances of skin cancer I’m going to do.

5.) Find the shade

There are times when the sun cannot be avoided, but you should be able to find some shade.

6.) Stay cool

Did you know that sweat can irritate eczema suffers skin?  Yes, it’s best to do what you can do avoid too much sweating.  Finding shade often helps my son, or only planning outings in the evening hours.

I try to follow these tips for myself and teach them to my children the importance of skin protection.  When I was younger my parents rarely put sunscreen on I can think of many painful sunburns and I was even crazy enough to jump into tanning beds.  Gosh, now that I think about it, we rubbed sun tanning oil all over us and baked our bodies.  OMG, I’m thankful my kids know better because I didn’t protect my skin until I was in my early 20s.

I know my parents didn’t do it intentionally, they didn’t know about the effects the sun could have on our skin or they would have done the same thing I do with my children.  I’m glad I know better now, and I’m thankful my kids find out if they go outside in the sun to put on sunscreen, even if it’s only for a few minutes.
