The 5 Year Old Super Hero! How it all began…

by Jenn Brockman

My kids are rockstars man, they get up every single morning without complaining, spend the day at school, come home do homework, chores, shower, eat, get ready for bed and do it all over again the following day. Seriously, their day isn’t much different from adults. The school is their job, so it’s important they start their day right with a wholesome breakfast. Of course, they’re still kids so it has to be something they enjoy or they won’t’ eat it lol.

Which brings me to Batman™ Chocolate Strawberry and Superman™ Caramel Crunch which is General Mills’ Super Heroes cereal! We never agree on anything in my family. Oh, don’t worry I’m not going to tell you we all loved both bowls of cereal because that wouldn’t be true.  We all like both bowls of cereal but have our favorite. I LOVE Superman™ Caramel Crunch and the kids well they like Batman™ Chocolate Strawberry and my husband he is happy as long as someone is feeding him lol. He told me he would not choose between Batman and Superman because they might find out and if they knew he wouldn’t get to hang out in the bat cave or go on fly-by with Superman. My daughter ate it up too. Yup, now she can’t choose which cereal to love the most either. One day she wants to go on a fly-by and see the bat cave.

Things I Want My Daughter To KnowMattie has always been all about her daddy, and her Daddy is wrapped around her little finger lol even if he tells her stories from time to time which has created an ongoing battle with plenty of harmless, but fun pranks.  My husband loves it as much as the kids do.  Which is a good thing considering he started this ongoing battle.  It goes back to before we were even married he told out oldest daughter (who is really my stepdaughter, so you don’t get confused.  We just do not think of our family like that. They are my kids, and I am their mom) something that she to this day hasn’t let him live down.  See my husband and I rarely drink. Okay, never mind I was going to go with an excuse for him, but there isn’t one. He stuck his foot in his mouth because he was nervous being around my dad (sorry babe).  Things ended up sweet between the two of them; my husband even calls my father Dad when he talks to him & talks on the phone with him more than I do lol.  My dad even learned to text so he could text Shawn jokes and stuff lol.

superman cerealIt makes me happy my husband and father have got so close because he didn’t have a dad growing up or now for that matter, and it used to have an impact on his life.  He was finally able to put it all away and move forward without his father because he gained a dad.   My daddy refers to my husband as his son, and you can tell my husband love it, it makes him proud.  Not long ago Shawn said that it felt amazing to have someone like my dad be proud to introduce him as their son.   Their relationship continues to grow; it’s not only helped Shawn move forward without his “father” but also become an even better dad.  Yes, this means a lot more playing, pranks, and stories lol but the kids love it. My husband you can tell is finally 1000% sure what he is doing.  He has always been a good father, but now he just seems to have more confidence in his dad skills.

Let’s get back to the story!  Shall we?

Shawn told our oldest daughter that she needed to go to bed because Santa would be there soon.  Catie knew better and told her dad she Santa wasn’t coming until the next day in a smart butt tone. Since my dad was right there and Shawn was worried bout making a wrong impression he decided to not to get on to her but to lighten things up and have a little fun.  He responded to Catie in his smart butt sarcastic voice and said, “Catie, gosh don’t you know Santa comes a day early in the mountains so he can make it to all the kids houses?” LOL, so poor Catie thought Santa came a day at the beginning of the mountains and when she told her friends they all wanted to go to the mountains for Christmas lol.  She never asked me if that was true, thank goodness because that would have been a hard one to tell.

Don’t feel sorry for my daughter, she isn’t innocent.  She has pulled plenty of pranks on her father, I even somehow got brought into this and placed on my husband team lol. I guess it’s mom and dad with the kids, and my kids are always trying to think of new parks they can pull on us, so we always have to be on guard.  Which means we need to start our day out right, and there can’t be a better way to start your day than with a bowl of Super Hero cereal right?   To be exact!!

So who do you prefer, Batman or Superman?  My kids think Batman, husband says Superman, and I’m torn between the two.  I have never thought of having to pick between the Batman and Superman.  So I figured it would be best if I focused on the cereal to help me lol.  I can choose a favorite cereal like I mentioned earlier and it’s without a doubt Superman™ Caramel Crunch.  Both are amazing, my kids like Batman™ Chocolate Strawberry so I guess it just depends on what your taste buds like.  Oh wait, for the record except Mattie, she is like her dad and can’t choose because she doesn’t want to hurt anyone’s feelings lol.

cerealJust in case you couldn’t tell already, we are a Super Hero family, and things get an extra crazy when to let’s say a movie comes out or even better we have a box of Super Hero cereal sitting on the table.  Yup, it’s a constant reminder to put on your cape and get to work. My husband always has ran by the table on his “super-fast legs” (that is what he calls them lol) and grabs Mattie’s spoon out of her hand while she is eating.  It’s all fun but he gets her every time, and she got so upset and had to go after him to save her spoon, lol.  Well, that is until the other day when  she got a little irritated with her father, put down her eyebrows and said, “Dad, why did you and your super-slow legs do that?” My husband laughs, and Mattie demands her spoon back but quickly remembers she is talking to her father still and changes things up by adding please and thank you.  After she gets her spoon back she looks at my husband in her Batman’s face and tell him, “Don’t cry daddy, I’ll deal with you later and your super-slow leg powers, but first I need to eat my bat cereal.”

The best part about all of it was my husband’s face; it was priceless.  I think for a second he went brain-dead because he was thinking so hard about what she just said.  Knowing my husband, I’m going to bet it went something like,

“What did she just tell me?”

“Did I just hear what I thought I heard, surely not, but maybe?”

“Wait was she being rude?”

“Maybe I should be upset about it and bust out with some daddy moves, so she remembers who she is messing with?”

“Wait can I get mad at her for it, she was playing I think.”

“Oh no, it’s happening!  My little Mattie is getting too old to play with dad.  Today’s the day that Mattie is too old to play with me.  It can’t be, but it is.”

“Oh, what’s that she is eating there.  Are those little bats?  Okay, time out I seriously need to eat me a bowl of that.”

“Hold up, Mattie is only five, she has plenty of playing years left it must be something else, I bet her mom is in on this.”

“OH CRAP, she knows.  I don’t know how or what she knows, but she knows.”

“She has that funky smile, I either did something I don’t remember, or she thinks I’m an idiot.”

“I should offer to take the kids to school and surprise her with coffee or something.  is staring at me with that funky smile.

“How does she always know things I do before I do?”

“Dang this is good cereal. If I take the kids to school & pick up coffee, maybe she’ll think I’m trying to be all sweet and stuff.”

“Oh man, I’m so hiding this cereal when I get home, so the kids don’t eat it all.”

“CRUNCH, CRUNCH, CRUNCH! MMMMMMM! Crunch!”

superman cerealYUP, if I had to imagine what went through his mind in those 2 minutes, that’s what it would be.  I know he was worried I was upset or something.  I can tell by the look on his face and the way he kept staring at me and smiling.  He was testing me to see if he could get a smile back, then offering to take the kids to school.  Man that was smooth.  Too bad I wasn’t upset with him at all, it was just funny to see his face after Mattie told him that she was busy.  I’ll never forget that face, lol.

And, I will never forget to hide the cereal if I plan on making something with it.  OMG, I had to buy another box of Batman™ Chocolate Strawberry to make my Sonoa Cereal Bars because they ate all of it.  Yup, the Samoa No Bake Cereal Bars Recipe almost never made it to the table and on the blog.

superman cerealI mean I get it, it’s crunchy little bats with the perfect hint of strawberry.  Not to mention the fact that Batman™ Chocolate Strawberry contains no colors from artificial sources, artificial flavors, high fructose corn syrup and.  It’s a good source of Calcium and Vitamin D with 12g of whole grain per serving, only 9 grams of sugar per serving, and the impressive, glossy, embossed Batman emblem.

Oh, but don’t you let that count Superman out because that’s my favorite cereal box Super Hero.  I say that because I can’t choose between the two unless I use the cereal lol.  Plus Superman™ Caramel Crunch has no colors from artificial sources, high fructose corn syrup or artificial flavors.  It is an excellent source of Calcium and Vitamin D, only contains only 9 grams of sugar per serving, 12g of whole grain per serving, and the impressive, glossy, embossed Superman emblem.  Not to mention you can make some pretty yummy Samoa cereal bars that you don’t even need to bake with it.

superman cerealSo thanks to the Super Hero Cereal my 5-year-old is Batgirl or Supergirl, but never Superman or Batman, lol.  Oh, and since girls are better than boys she always wins even when it’s her dad lol.
