Avoid Back To School Stress With Survival Tips for ParentsThe back to school season is one of my least favorite times of the year; everything is so stressful.  I’m just lucky nothing has blown up yet, lol.  I’m not even joking, last year I left my kids at home while I did most of the shopping to help with the stress.

Before we get started on ways to avoid back to school stress with survival tips for parents I wanted to share a few things. The wonderful folks at Fruit of the Loom understand the stress we often deal with once the back to school season rolls around and they wanted to help moms destress just a little with the Fruit of the Loom bonus pack of undies and the Fruit of the Loom Bonus Bonus Pack Contest.

Yes, the bonus is extra undies for the kids from a brand so many of us know and trust, Fruit of the Loom!  I recently received a package for my daughter and I have to admit getting bonus products is always a plus in my book.  Plus, Mattie likes them because they are fun, bright, and colorful.

Avoid The Stress With a Few Back To School Survival Tips for Parents

Avoid Back To School Stress With Survival Tips for Parents

Here are a few Back to School Survival Tips:

Go through any leftover school supplies your kids brought home

Look at everything your kids brought home last year and check to see if there is anything you can use for the upcoming year before you start shopping.  I always end up with a few things the kids can use again – scissors, pencil sharpeners, etc.

Make a list

WARNING, do not attempt to go back to school shopping without being prepared.  Trust me here; I used to think I could get everything done with only my kid’s school supply list.  WRONG!  I highly suggest creating a plan of attack – where you will go, what you need from each place, include sizes for all the kids, and anything else that might be helpful while you are out.

Make a family calendar at least a month in advance

Create a family calendar and put it where everyone can see it.  Put important back to school information.

Get back into the swing of things early

Two weeks before school starts make sure your kids are going to bed early and getting up early.  After a few nights of this make sure everyone, including you, is going to bed like they would if tomorrow was a school day and getting up at the same time they would get up for school.  Put it on your back to school calendar.

Start your back to school shopping early

Even if the kids go with you to the store you can start your back to school shopping a tad early so you are not in the store last minute searching for things on your kid’s list.   Save yourself a headache of bouncing from store to store and shop early.

Meet the teacher

For your child to have a successful school year they need a good teacher and you’re going to want to meet them before you leave your child with them.  Don’t skip out on the meet the teacher day at your kid’s school if you can avoid it. Not getting to meet your child’s teacher before the first day of school can not only be stressful for you but your child too.  It’s better both of you meet the teacher so you can drop them off for their first day back without wondering what their teacher is going to be like.

Go alone as often as you can

I know the kids are excited about getting all their back to school supplies and that’s great, but it’s okay to sneak out and get a few things without them.  Plus, it will save you the stress of the kids asking for things, taking 25 minutes to choose the most expensive folder, telling you that they must have mechanical pencils even though it clearly says NO MECHANICAL PENCILS on their list, lol.  Seriously, the list goes on and on! Why not just leave them home one evening with dad or have someone watch them so you can run a few errands?

Have an end of summer party for EVERYONE!

YES, party! We have ours a week before school starts it’s a great way for EVERYONE to have a little fun before summer comes to an end and a great way for parents to let go of all the stress involved in the back to school season.  Do your best to be finished with all your back to school shopping trips before you have the party.

Let the kids put on a fashion show

You remember being a kid? Trying on the clothing you just got for school was always so fun and made the return to school a little more exciting.   Let them put on a fashion show for you. It’s fun for everyone!

Backpacks and lunchboxes

I know this sounds crazy but let your children choose their backpacks and lunchboxes.  Their backpack and lunchbox is a way for your child to express themselves, especially if your child wears uniforms to school.  I know my kids always love picking out something that helps them express who they are and what they like because they wear uniforms, so it’s harder for them to do that with their clothing.

Do something nice for your kids

I always try and forget about the stress by doing something for someone I care about. Putting a smile on someone’s face has a way of helping me destress.  Since the kids will be nervous on their first day of school, I always plan to pack them a special lunch.  You can put a special note in there or send them with something fun like this Tuna Fish Sub Sandwich.  My kids love it when I do this because all the other children see it and talk about it, Mattie says it makes her famous lol.  She is only in kindergarten so if a fun lunch makes you cool why not, lol.

Make the not so stressful items last on your list

I know there isn’t a whole lot that’s not stressful about back to school shopping but there are a few, and I’ve learned saving things like socks, undershirts, and undies for last can help you leave the store less stressed out.  I think it’s because they are not items you have to put a whole lot of thought into – look for the right size, maybe which pack of Fruit of the Loom has the brightest colors, but that’s about it.  Just grab Fruit of the Loom and go on about your day.  One can only wish everything was that easy.
