My kids have played with cell phones, tablets, and even laptops since I can remember. I have always said, this is the world they will grow up in, and I want to help them learn how to properly use technology. We have had our learning periods, but all in all I think we do a good job monitoring our children’s technology time, yet giving them the freedom to learn how to use desktop computers, cell phones, tablets, laptops, and computers properly. Plus, they know the consequences are stiff when it comes to not following moms’ techy rules.
It’s a scary world out there, and monitoring my children’s tech time is top priority. Never assume they will not do something, because that’s the second they will, lol. However, use correctly you can help your child learn from technology. There is now programs which are connecting kids online to learning communities, learning apps, online learning games, and they have worked for my kids, because my children are interested in technology, and it’s fun leaning on the computer.
10 Ways To Help Your Child Learn From Technology
Children can learn from technology, especially now they are back in school it can be a great way to help them get a head. Since the kids are back in school, or almost back in school here are a few ways you can use computer, tablets, and laptops to help them learn, and see that education can be fun. I say that because my daughter, Vayda was having a hard time with math, over the summer we worked online, she started to understand it, and this year she has a whole new attitude toward math – it’s fun!
Prepare – First you’re going to need to prepare you computer for your child’s use. If you’re using Microsoft Windows 8.1, you’re in good shape you can build them their own little profile, set up just for them. Windows 8.1 is a great operating system for families, because it allows you to set up individual profiles, which are customizable, and you can download some great apps, set restrictions, and more.
Talk to your childs teacher – Find out what they will be working, and ask questions. You’re childs teacher should be able to help you find great learning programs, or at least tell you what your child will need to be working on.
Choose activities that will keep them engaged – You know your children, choose fun, yet educational programs that will keep them wanting more. It can work, it might take a few try’s to find what works for them, but it’s totally doable, and don’t give up. There are some great online learning games, communities and apps for kids of all ages, in all subjects.
Teach them – You might have to play the game first, so you’re familiar with how everything works. Once you sit them down, be sure and explain everything to them, maybe show them. You know how you child learns best, spend quality time with them to be sure they are the understanding everything. If they don’t’ understand, things won’t be fun.
Talk – Ask them about their game or learning session. What did they like, did they find it challenging, what they learned. You want it to be challenging, and you want them to learn, but you want them to be excited about what they learned, and how easily they learned it. Learning is easy when it’s fun, remember.
Focus on play – Learning is easier, and you remember more when it’s fun! Focus on keeping things fun, even as an adult we tend to remember things better when we learn it in a fun fashion.
Typing – AS they get older encourage typing lessons, it will help them later down the line if they are somewhat familiar with typing. If they’re going to learn from technology they should learn how to type along the way right!
Teach your children a computer is a tool – A computer is to serve as a tool, and not a replacement for human education. It’s to help them become better at something, it shouldn’t replace their interaction with people.
Pay attention – While you children are online, pay attention. Don’t leave them be, it’s better to be safe than sorry, and I’m a firm believer in monitoring children’s time online. It’s a scary world out there if they are not supervised.
Make it fun – I think the most important part of learning from apps, games, and online educational tools is to make it fun. If it’s boring they will not use it to its full potential. You can even make technology time more fun by offering a glass of juice, or maybe a fun snack. Help your child set up their account on the computer so it’s easy for them to use, it’s fun, and helps them feel like a big kid. My daughter has a blast setting up her profile, and she had a grin from ear to ear, becasue she was excited to have her own account set up just for her.
