My two youngest girls had me in tears the other day. We were going to the grocery store, and there is this man who sits outside and plays his guitar because he likes to see people smile. Well, the other day we were talking to him and learned that he is trying to raise money and find a match for a kidney transplant. My girls started asking me questions, and we talked about things I could tell it bothered them.
So a few days later we’re going to the store when the girls beg me to turn around and go back to the house because they needed to get something. I made them tell me what it was before turning around. They say they wanted to donate some of the money they have saved up to the man at the store if he is there. So I turn around, let the girls run inside, and make them show me their money. They brought all of it, $250 between the two of them. They had been saving it for a pool next summer. I talked to them, and they knew what they were doing and giving up, but they didn’t care. And, I’m not going to stop my children from such a kind, selfless act.
When we get to the store, my girls head over to the gentleman, listen to him play a bit, complement him on the song he was playing and give him the money. We then walk inside; I look behind me, and the man is looking at us crying. I don’t think he realized how much money they gave him right away. When we were leaving, he gave my girls a hug and talked to them for a minute. He tried to give their money back but they wouldn’t’ take it, they told him that’s what people are supposed to do, help each other and told him happy holidays.
Thinking about it still makes me cry. I am so proud of my girls, their choice to help someone over saving for a material belonging is just amazing. They do listen to their mom and dad; it’s proof!
