They say when you know better you do better… well, we’re going to hope that this is the case when it comes to decorating your bedroom! How many times have you been to someone’s house and seen the way they decorated and thought it was a little tacky? You may not have thought it was tacky, but you at least thought (and probably could tell) that they didn’t know what they were doing when they decorated their home.

Looking at someone else’s home, you can immediately pick out all the things that are wrong, but are you able to see the problems in your own home? Take a look at your bedroom. What does it say about you? Hopefully all good things, but I can almost guarantee you’ve made some rookie mistakes in your bedroom decor.

Rookie Mistake: Bedroom Decorating Blunders You Can Get Away With Once

There are certain traits of an inexperienced decorator, and you can see it in the design of their home and the items they put in their home. Take a look at these common mistakes seen in bedroom decor, and then re-evaluate your bedroom. After reading this, you will know better…it’ll then be up to you to do better.

A “Matchy-Matchy” Room

Who put it in the rule book that everything in a room had to match everything to a tee? If your favorite color is purple, you absolutely have to have a purple bedspread, lamps, and pillows. That couldn’t be further from the truth. It’s almost like one of those myths being debunked!

When it comes to decorating your bedroom, try to decorate it with things that go together, not necessarily with things that match. Having a bedroom that’s too “matchy-matchy” can make a room feel like it is structured and lacks in personality. In other words, you don’t want your room to look like it jumped straight out of an old JCPenny catalog!

It’s okay to have colors that don’t match, and just because the colors don’t match, doesn’t mean that the colors don’t complement each other. You might have a bedspread that is turquoise blue… it would be gorgeous to add yellow decorative throw pillows on the bed with it. Those two colors don’t match, but they still mesh well together.

Too Many Pillows

While we’re on the subject of pillows, let’s talk some more about it. When it comes to accent pillows for your bed, some people can go a little overboard. You definitely want to layer your bed in pillows, but tastefully… the keyword here is tasteful. Not doing so can put you in a “tacky” predicament, making your bed look cluttered.

One way to make sure you’re not overloading your bed with decorative pillows is to add two euro pillows to your bed. They’re the oversized pillows that give your bed a little more depth and dimension. If you add these two pillows to your bed, you’ll be able to better see how many smaller decorative pillows you need to add.

Cheap Bedding

This is a mistake common among many, many people. Can you guess what the common denominator is in this rookie mistake? It’s the infamous BED-IN-A-BAG!!! Now there’s nothing wrong with these, and people use them all the time. They have nice colors and patterns but they don’t really add any other values to your sleeping experience, other than providing covers.

Now, what you can and should consider is luxury bedding. Luxury bedding not only looks great in any room but after you’ve experienced it, it will be your favorite way to sleep!

Turning Your Bedroom into Another Room

This is not necessarily a rookie mistake, but it is a repeated mistake common among EVERYBODY! Your entire home is a kitchen table for the most part, but your bedroom definitely should not be a kitchen sink. It’s one thing to eat in your room, but it’s another thing to leave your dirty dishes in your room too.

Our bedrooms have been kitchens and offices. It’s understandable to have those days where you just want to get in the bed and do whatever it is you need to do from the bed, and that includes watching tv, checking your email, paying bills, and ordering pizza. Just try not to do it every day.. that is a decorating no-no. Doing everything from your bed just runs the risk of creating a mess and you’re more than likely to have some spills and stains on your bedding… they key would be to clean the spill before it stains!

Knick-Knack Overload

You know how people say that they’re full of useless information? Well, our bedroom can be the same way… full of useless things! These knick-knacks come in the form of little figurines, empty vases, candleless candle holders… anything that’s not being used that doesn’t add to the overall decor of your room… those things need to go! Or at least be stored away somewhere!
