10 Ways to Keep Kids Motivated to Learn in School

by Jenn Brockman

Since the kids will be heading back to school shortly, and we’ve already started our back to school shopping I’ve also been thinking about ways to keep my kids motivated to learn at school this year.  Over the years, I’ve learned a few tricks to keep the kids motivated to learn, but I’m always open to new ideas too.  I’ve learned if I want my children to be a good student and want them to have the motivation to learn even when things get tough I need to do things to motivate them.  I know my children are smart, but without the motivation to apply herself at school she’s not going to give it 100%. Ways to Keep Kids Motivated to Learn in School

Over the years, I’ve found a few things that have motivated my children to learn and apply themselves in school even when things get tough.

  • Let them explore their likes when it comes to reading.  Reading is so important, but nobody wants to read things they don’t enjoy.  Sure, there are times we all have to read things we don’t enjoy but to experience the pure joy of reading it’s important to find things you enjoy reading.  Allowing your children to explore different kinds of books will help them find the real joy of reading.
  • Encourage them to try new things they are interested in.  From softball to the math club encourage your children to try new things if they show interested.  I always make my kids finish anything they start, but I respect their decision to do it again.  It’s how we learn who we are, things we like, and things we don’t like.  We have to support our children to try, finish, and make decisions from a young age.  It helps them to become more independent and have more confidence in themselves and their ability to make choices.
  • Encourage children to express themselves, their feelings, and help them develop the tools to make decisions.  Allowing children to choose their extracurricular activities, take part in important family decisions, picking out their school clothes, supplies, how they want to wear their hair is necessary.  It’s equally important that you support them.  Even if you think something isn’t their best option it’s important to let them learn on their own, it’s important they know you trust and support them.  We still have to be parents and protect them from things, but we also have to allow them to learn and become their own person.
  • Ask about what your child is learning and be there to support them if they need help.  Talking to you child about what they are learning helps and being there to help shows them how important their education is.
  • Don’t forget to tell them good job and that you are proud of them.  When you see your child doing something good, they get a good grade, or you see them applying themselves 100% be sure to tell them.  Kids need to know we are proud of them and notice things they are doing good.
  • Let kids be kids.  When school is, back in session be sure to remember how important it is for kids to be kids.  Allow them to play, be young, and enjoy their childhood.  Learning and doing well in school is important, but so is being a child and having fun.
  • Help your kids establish and maintain a morning and evening routine.  It’s been my experience that not only my children but I respond better to a routine when the kids are in school.  Kids need structure at home, as well as school.  If you’ve ever woke up late, I’m sure you already know how quickly mornings can turn hectic.  It can easily be avoided by developing a morning routine.
  • Teach them how to stay organized.  Organization is key, I’ve learned that the hard way, lol.  However, I’ve also learned that teaching my children how to stay organized with school not only helps them now but will help them later in life.
  • Create a quite safe place for learning.  We made the kids their very own learning table.  The top is a chalkboard so they can jot things down if needed, and have a little fun.  It’s a great place for learning.  When they sit down at the table, they know it’s going to be quite, and the family will respect them by being quiet and allowing them to get their homework finished.
  • Positive reinforcement rocks.  Take your child out for ice cream, buy them a new shirt of their choice, spend the day at the park, or ask them what they would like to do.  Just like us, having something to work for keeps kids motivated.  My daughter and I made a deal at the beginning of the summer.  If she kept up with her summer schooling, gave it 100%, and kept up with her chores without problems, I would get her a phone.  I was sure to go over the details, rules, etc. so she knew what she was getting.  I didn’t want her to think she was going to be able to be online anytime she pleased or use the phone at school.  She’s worked hard, and I’m going to surprise her with a new phone from Total Wireless.

Vayda isn’t expect her new phone until school starts, but I decided to surprise her because she has done a phenomenal job, and my husband and I are leaving town for a week, then the kids will be at my mom for a week.  Since she’s done so well, I think it’s a great time to give her the phone, and it helps me feel a little better because I know she can reach me if needed.

kids be kidsI decided to go with Total Wireless because there is no contract, they have great phones, affordable prices, and they offer a variety of affordable plans.  Oh, and did I mention their phones are super affordable?  It’s a great place for not only a child’s first phone but anyone because of the variety of phones and plans offered.

Since this is Vayda’s first phone I decided to go with the Total Wireless LG Prepaid L39 Optimus Dynamic II Smartphone because it’s affordable, offers everything we need, and it’s the one she wants.  The Android phone includes great features like 3.8” touchscreen display, 1 GHz processor, 2 megapixel camera/video recorder, 3G WiFi capability, 4GB microSD card, Bluetooth technology, access to Google Play, MP3 player, standby time of 11 days, and up to 8 hours of talk time.  The best part is I was able to pick the phone up for under $40.  Can you believe that?  I’m still in disbelief, but I got the email, it’s on its way and my next phone I’ll share more details about the phone and service.
