This year I want to put in extra effort and make sure I make Christmas special for my kids. The past two years haven’t been easy for the kids with their father and I divorcing. So making this year extra special is a priority for me. I want to make sure my kids realize how important they are. I’ve been thinking of ways I can make Christmas holiday extra special for them this year without making it all about gifts. I want to get them the things they want for Christmas, but I also want to focus on the little things that help me avoid overspending, holiday stress, and running short on time.
How To Make Christmas Special for Kids
Here are ways I’m planning to make Christmas special for my kids.
Create a budget
Don’t overspend, create a realistic shopping budget for Christmas. It’s easier to get all your kids Christmas gifts when you have a budget and are aware of how much money you’re able to spend. By creating a budget, I avoid overspending and stress that comes along with it.
Let go of expectations
Allow yourself to let go of expectations and stay flexible to avoid disappointment because things don’t go as planned. Give yourself the freedom to celebrate Christmas without expectations. You’ll be happier if you focus on what you have rather than what is not working out. Which means you’ll have better quality time with your children.
Don’t over-schedule yourself
Don’t over-schedule yourself! Make plenty of time to take part in activities with the kids, shopping, traveling, planning, cooking, etc.
Build Christmas Excitement with an Advent Calendar
Advent Calendars are a fun way to countdown to Christmas. An Advent Calendar has been a Christmas tradition for as long as I can remember and I purchased the coolest Advent Calendar from Kohl’s.
I found a LEGO Advent Calendar at Kohl’s this year and we LOVE it! My girls are all about LEGO anything so finding this LEGO Friends Advent Calendar from Kohl’s was super exciting. And, it’s got to be the coolest Advent Calendar yet. It’s a real game changer, we all loved it so much we started a little early so I’ll be purchasing either the LEGO City Advent Calendar or the LEGO Star Wars Advent Calendar to countdown till Christmas.
The LEGO Advent Calendars allow you to build and collect festive LEGO ornaments for your Christmas tree–candy cane, snowman, Christmas tree, gingerbread man, reindeer, and more! Each ornament will be special and have its own memory!
Listen to Christmas music
Once Christmas it’s gone for another year. Enjoy the holiday season! Get everyone in the holiday spirit with Christmas music.et everyone in the holiday spirit.
Let them open a small gift early
You remember being a child, it’s hard to sit and look at all the gifts wrapped under the Christmas tree. I’m huge on trying to focus on the meaning behind Christmas and giving to others. When I see my kids do something kind for someone I make sure and tell them how proud of them I am and might even let them open a small gift.
One year we went grocery shopping and my kids asked me to run them back to the house but they wouldn’t tell me why. When we got back to the store, there was a gentleman we always talk to playing Christmas music outside of the store they gave him $100! Yes, both my girls combined all their money and gave it to the man. When I asked them why, it brought tears to my eyes and made me so proud. My girls and I got to know this man pretty well, but I didn’t know they paid that close attention to our conversations. They had saved money to help him with his kidney transplant. My kids did this out of the kindness of their heart, he never once asked for money, and didn’t sit in front of the store asking for money. He played music there because he liked to make people happy.
After the holidays passed we didn’t see him for almost a year and my girls were worried about him. Then one day he was sitting outside of the store playing music. Come to find out we didn’t see him because he got his kidney transplant. It was a very rewarding experience for my girls and the gentleman remembered them right away, gave them a big hug and told them thank you.
My kids make me so proud and whether it’s telling your kids you are proud of them or allowing them to open a gift early, I think rewarding kind acts is important.
Christmas movie night
We all have our favorite Christmas movies! Be sure to plan a Christmas movie night with the kids, cuddle up with hot chocolate and enjoy spending time together.
Make a gingerbread house
We make a gingerbread house every year. Have fun, make your gingerbread house as little or big as you want and remember to be creative. Either way, it’s sure to create memories for the whole family.
Let your kids help you with Christmas shopping
While I was doing Christmas shopping online at Kohl’s.com I invited my kids to help me shop for a gift for my nephew who is all about Hot Wheels! The girls picked out the Hot Wheels Rooftop Race Garage Playset. I can’t wait to see him open it, he gets so excited about his Hot Wheels! I know it will make the girls feel good knowing they picked it out.
Whether you shop at Kohls.com or visit your local store consider allowing the kids to help pick out gifts for grandparents, aunts, uncles, etc. When it comes to open gifts, they will be proud they took part in picking out their loved one gifts. It’s sure to create a memorable experience for everyone and a tradition your kids may pass down to their children. Plus, it helps them feel the joy of giving and it’s a great way to help kids learn to appreciate the holiday season.
Take the kids Christmas Caroling
Make hot chocolate, get candles and take kids Christmas Caroling. This is a fun way to spread Christmas joy to others!
Buy a combined gift for the kids
My two girls love LEGO so I decided to purchase LEGO Friends Emma’s Deluxe Bedroom Set and LEGO Friends Friendship House for them to share. Not only will these gifts be great to promote playtime together, but they will also have hours and hours of fun.
LEGO Friends Friendship House will give them hours of fun playtime together. They can build Olivia, Andrea, Emma, Dash the dog, Rumble the hamster and Cinnamon the bunny mini-doll figures. Plus, build a 4-story converted fire station building, side balcony, roof terrace, performance terrace, and even have fun with the barbecue working pulley system, spinning fireman’s slide, and pole, a mailbox, a bicycle with a trailer and a friendship tree with a swing. The garage includes a hamster wheel as well as a tube system. Kitchen includes a sink, microwave, worktop, and refrigerator. And, the living room features opening cupboards and a craft table with five stools. The LEGO Friends Emma’s Deluxe Bedroom Set lets kids to recreate their favorite LEGO friends rooms!
