We just finished playing the CASHFLOW Board Game, which made me start thinking about things. Do you think teaching kids money management skills is a critical part of parenting? I most certainly do. I wish the world weren’t all about money, but it is, you need money to get a home, car, and stay healthy. Huge thank you to RichDad who is not only sponsoring this post, but inspiring me to write and think of ways to be a more financially savvy person and teach my kids money management skills..
Learning money management in life is critical. Looking back I am extremely lucky. My mom realized it was critical to teach her kids money management skills. We are all pretty good at managing our finances, understand the importance of saving, and are not scared to work for what we want.
I’m not perfect; I might know how to manage money and sit here and tell you how great I am at it, but the temptation has the best of me. Yes, more than once, but only once this bad. See I’m a shopper, when I get upset about life, I cry, get upset, smile and go shopping. Normally, it’s more of a window shopping thing, but gosh last time it was $6000! Okay, so let me explain…
My husband and I split up; I was dealing with more than just that and was extremely depressed. My home went from having four kids and a husband to being me and Mattie, but all my husband’s stuff was still there. Yes, it was like burning my eye, and I just wanted it all to go away. Rather than staying home, I did what any women with the most amazing 2-year-old who just received the best bonus she had ever received would do, I WENT SHOPPING!
Fun Ways To Teach Kids About Money
Are you teaching your kids about money, how to spend wisely and save for a rainy day? Here are few fun ways you can teach kids about money.
Let the kids play, it’s just money
If your child has some money set aside, found some, or a relative hooked them up for being cute and they want to play store or something like it, let them. There are so many different ways to have fun with your child and help them learn and grow. Whether it’s counting change in their restaurant or playing an awesome board game like CASHFLOW, they’re more likely to remember mistakes made and lessons learned in a fun enviorment.
Setting money management goals can be motivating.
Work with your child to set realistic goals to learning about money. Write them down, and put them somewhere both of you can get to it. When they reach a goal, celebrate! Goal setting can make thing fun and motivate children to continue the responsible behavior.
Allow the kids to earn money
The best way to teach children about money is to give them a way to make their own. Whether you want to set up a weekly allowance and chore chart or pay per job, make sure it is something you and your child can agree on. However, be sure to set your reminder on their payday, you don’t want them to think you forgot to pay them, because paying bills is a priority.
Allow the kids to spend their money
Let your children spend their money and don’t bail them out and pay for their toys if they don’t have enough money. Next time you’re at the store and they don’t have enough money to buy a particular item, explain their options – choosing a more affordable toy, or saving up for a bit to get the toy you want.
Road trip to the bank to open a savings account.
To help encourage savings load up the kids and take them to your bank! Most banks have great children’s savings accounts!
Give back to those who are in need
I can’t think of anything that makes me happier than knowing my kids helped someone in need because their hearts told them to.
Don’t hide talking about money with the children.
I know you’re not going to tell them everything, but don’t make money a secret subject. Feel free to involve them, ask them questions, and get their reaction.
CASHFLOW Board Game
Have you heard of the excellent board game called CASHFLOW by Robert Kiyosaki and Kim Kiyosaki? You might remember it from years ago, and if you don’t that is okay because it’s back and WAY better! CASHFLOW was created by Robert Kiyosaki who is also the author of the best-selling personal finance book of all time Rich Dad Poor Dad and Kim Kiyosaki, author of It’s Rising Time.
One of my favorite things about CASHFLOW 101 is that it teaches not only you, but the kids how to get out of the Rat Race and on the Fast Track. CASHFLOW 101 simulates real-life financial situations and strategies. This one board game can teach you and everyone else playing accounting, finance, and even investing and its fun too. I rant all the time about how children learn better when it’s in a fun environment, but so do many adults.
My youngest daughter and I were on a team because she is a little too young to play on her own just yet, but she really didn’t sit around and wait for me either. CASHFLOW does more than teach you about investing and learning how to acquire assets, but also different ways to behave while investing scenarios. You just never know either, you might be a little more willing to take a chance, try aggressive investing or try a little of them all to see which one works best…
CASHFLOW has been teaching people how to create cash flow, so they finally updated their remarkable investing better than ever before! I’m super excited to play CASHFLOW more and introduce it to more of my family. From what I’ve experienced, I like the game. Everything is clear easy to read, and nicely set up.
I’m loving the CASHFLOW 101 Financial Statement Calculator which provides you with an at-a-glance management of your finances and Save The Paper, Save The Erasers calculate deals, stores your information, and transfers money to help make the game faster and more impressive than before!
