Sadly, it can be too easy to allow yourself to get caught up in the negativity in the world and find yourself depressed while searching for ways to boost your self-esteem.  Let’s face it, the world doesn’t make it easier for us to maintain good self-esteem all of the time, so it’s important to find things to do to boost your self-esteem.  It doesn’t help that we have to watch all the sexual objectification the media presents every time we turn on the TV or listen to certain songs, for that matter.  However, we must be strong, fight back, and find things that help us increase our self-esteem because you are worth it.

I have suffered from major self-esteem issues and still do at times, but I have to stop it before I allow myself to get sucked into feeling depressed or allowing something to damage my self-esteem because I have three girls who I’m raising to be strong, confident young ladies.

Falling out of touch with yourself happens when you buy into other ideas of what you are supposed to be or should be doing. Finding yourself again when you’re feeling lost may seem impossible, but with the right help, you can find yourself and boost your self-esteem.

Here are a few things I do to help me, and I hope you’ll find a few things that will help you boost your self-esteem when you feel yourself going down that road.

1.) Take time to relax and allow your mind to take a break

Seriously, stop and relax because stress is toxic to not only your mental health but your physical health as well, which can easily result in damaging your self-confidence.  I tend to be a thinker, which can get me into trouble if I don’t stop.  The best way I have found to do that is through meditation.  Not long ago, I decided to give meditation a try, and WOW, I was surprised at how well it helped me feel calm and relaxed and helped my brain restart without all the fog.  Meditation might not be for you, and you might benefit from a walk down the beach or sitting alone on your front porch watching cars.  It doesn’t matter how you do it, but make yourself relax and take it easy twice a week.  I think you’ll be surprised at how much it helps.  If you have not ever given meditation a fair shot, I suggest it.  You never know; it could be the one thing that helps you start over with a clear mind.

When I’m feeling down, I like to spend time with my husband and my kids.  It never fails; they make me smile, laugh, and remember that I am important, beautiful, and loved by all the people that matter to me.  Plus, my kids are darn crazies, and my husband isn’t far behind them, so I wouldn’t have them any other way, just as they wouldn’t have me any other way.  It’s amazing how quickly things can change when you realize just how important you are to the people in your life and how important they are to you.  If anything should boost your self-confidence, it does mine, because I tend to think my kids and husband are pretty awesome.  I think it’s safe to say I must be alright because they seem to think so.

3.) Do not allow yourself to idle! Stop procrastinating and do it!

If you have been meaning to join a new mom group, go on a romantic getaway with your spouse, or even something small, such as a new outfit, stop procrastinating and do it.  Procrastination and negative self-confidence seem to go hand in hand when I’m feeling down.  Sometimes I have to make myself get up and go after something, which isn’t always easy, but the results are always worth it.

4.) Do something for yourself

Do something nice for yourself, just because you are awesome.  As a mom, wife, sister, daughter, and all the other roles we play in other people’s lives, it’s easy to forget about ourselves.  Sure, it’s important to do things for your loved ones, but it’s also important to do things for yourself too.  It doesn’t have to be anything huge; maybe it’s getting your nails done every few weeks.

5.) Be proud of yourself and celebrate your accomplishments

You can be proud of yourself and celebrate your accomplishments without being seen as selfish or greedy, so be proud and celebrate the things you’ve done and will continue to do.

6.) Stop comparing yourself to other people

Seriously, stop it!  Don’t allow yourself to get sucked into that game.  Remember, we are all unique and extraordinary.  And if you’re comparing yourself to one of those girls on TV, remember, you could look like one if you had Photoshop, but you are a real woman, and in my opinion, real is better.  Plus, there is so much more to being a good mom, sister, wife, daughter, or person, for that matter, than the way you look.  I’m going to bet they think you are perfect just the way you are.  Remember, those are the only people you should worry about what they think of you because they are the only people who love you unconditionally.  If they think you’re awesome, then you are awesome!

7.) Don’t stop doing things that make you feel good

Gosh, it’s so easy to stop getting dressed up, doing your hair, or even putting on makeup when you don’t feel good about yourself.  Now, I’m not one to put on makeup or do my hair daily because I work from home, and I honestly don’t think women need all that to be beautiful.  However, it feels good to wake up each day, shower, get dressed, and be ready for the day.  Don’t allow yourself to spend the day in your jammies or forget to brush your teeth.  Take care of yourself, and don’t let things slip.

8.) Do things that make you feel good about yourself

What makes you feel good about yourself?  Maybe it’s doing your hair a certain way, coloring it, cutting it, or even putting on that special red lipstick you have tucked away in your makeup bag.  Whatever it is, do it for a little pick me up.  When I find myself feeling down, I spend a little extra time on myself because it makes me feel good.  I’ll spend some time doing my nails, maybe even a paid one, doing something different to my hair, putting on makeup, or even just a little lipstick to give my lips some color.  Lipstick is by far my favorite piece of makeup; it’s amazing what a little lip color can do, and there is a color for every season, mood, and occasion.

I enjoy doing things that make me feel like a woman, and I’ll admit it feels nice when my husband comes home and tells me I look beautiful.  It’s almost an instant pick-me-up and my husband helps seal the deal.  He tells me I’m beautiful all the time, but it’s different when I hear it, and I’m feeling good about myself.  It’s horrible what poor self-esteem does because when I’m struggling with confidence and self-esteem, I tend to think he is only telling me I’m beautiful because he feels bad, which isn’t true, but it’s true what I think when I’m depressed.  And when I’m feeling good, I know he is saying it because it’s the way he feels. Besides, our lives would be a lot different if he didn’t love me and thought I was beautiful. I just don’t stop thinking of the obvious when I’m feeling good, which is why I try to catch myself before I get depressed.  I believe him when I feel good about myself.

I love lipstick; the right color lipstick can certainly add a little something to a woman’s look.  Now, I’m in no way someone who thinks a woman has to wear makeup to be considered beautiful, and I leave the house all the time without makeup.  However, I also enjoy wearing makeup because it makes me feel good.  I especially like wearing lipstick because a little lip color does amazing things, and now that one of my favorite brands makes lipstick that not only provides a beautiful color but also moisturizes and conditions my lips, I’m doing the happy dance.
