Back To School Sleeping Tips

by Jenn Brockman

This time of year is always hard for me.  I struggle with sleep as it is and the back to school season means I have to leave my up late, sleeping in past 7 am behind me until next summer.  I know, I am still broken hearted but on the positive side of things I now have the whole day to get work done.  Well, I eventually will once I get back into a regular sleeping pattern, which is harder than I like to admit but I’m doing it.  Slowly, but surely I’m getting there, and I’m glad we started the kids on back to school schedule before school started.  I just wish I would have taken my advice and got my butt back on a back to school schedule too.

Start early

I know it is a little late for this but next year, be sure to start at least two weeks before school starts so everyone, including mom and dad, can get back on track for the back to school season.

Bedtime routine

What is your bedtime routine?  If you and the kids are having trouble getting to sleep, you might think about creating a relaxing bedtime routine.  Avoid rushing, try allowing the children plenty of time for their bath and maybe a bedtime story.

Off with the TV and electronics

Maybe you relaxed a little over the summer and allowed the kids to watch TV until they fell asleep or even play with an electronic, but now that it’s back to school season it’s time to get serious about sleep.

Don’t eat right before bed

Make dinner early and avoid big meals close to bedtime.  If you kids are anything like mine, it can lead to tummy aches, and it’s also uncomfortable to try and go to sleep on a full belly.

Pay attention to what everyone is drinking

I have a rule, milk or whatever ONLY before bed.  Honestly, I don’t buy sodas or anything super sugary, but if we do have it in the house, the kids know come 5 pm they can only drink milk or water.

Comfy clean bed

Make sure your child’s bed is clean and comfortable.  Kids tend to get crazy; it’s nothing for them to pull the sheet off which can be uncomfortable and make falling asleep difficult.  Plus, I don’t know about you, but I sleep better when my bed is nice, neat and smells fresh and clean.

Determine how much sleep everyone needs

Determining how much sleep everyone needs can help you with bedtimes, not just for the kids but mom and dad too.  You’ll likely have a  little time up after the kids have gone to bed but make sure you are in bed at your scheduled bedtime. TRUST me, taking advantage of the house being quite only least to bad things lol.

Be active during the day

Be active regularly, it’s an awesome way to ensure you have a good nights rest, and it can help you fall asleep too.  FYI, don’t workout right before bed.  Try to fit in your workout in the morning or early afternoon if possible.

Sleep with your curtains open

If you have neighbors that can peek in your window, try using blinds so you can leave them a bit open.  Exposing yourself to sunlight in the morning can help you wake up and feel less groggy.

My mom used to wear ear plugs to bed.  I know it sounds funny, but I can’t say that I blame her my dad isn’t the quietest person in the world to sleep with.  My mom used to tell me that it was the best idea she ever came up with lol.

Melatonin

Between hauling kids to and from school, homework, dinner, practice and anything else they have going on it’s easy to get overloaded.  As parents we tend to forget sleep should be a priority for us too.  To help yourself wind down and get a good nights rest consider Natrol Fast Dissolve or Natrol Advance Sleep Melatonin, it’s designed to help support healthier sleep.
