How To Cut An Onion Without Crying? 8 Tear Free Ways To Chop Onions

by Jenn Brockman

Have you ever wondered how to cut an onion without crying?  If the answer is yes then I’m sure excited, not because you don’t know how to cut an onion without crying, but because I have 8 ways to make chopping and I don’t know anyone who enjoys crying while cutting onions.  I don’t enjoy it, but for some reason I always get stuck cutting the onion.  Here are a few life hacks to help you avoid crying while cutting an onion.

8 Tips To Help You Cut An Onion without CryingHow To Cut An Onion Without Crying? 8 Tear Free Ways To Chop Onions

If you have ever wondered how to cut an onion without crying try these 8 ways to chop onions and not cry.

  • To avoid crying your eyes out while chopping an onion stand under a vent.  I’ve tried this several times, and surprising enough it works pretty good.  Just don’t forget to make sure the vents on and it seems to work better with cool air.
  • Put a piece of bread in your mouth – I have not tried this but my sister puts a piece of bread into her mouth while she cuts onions.  She said she can still feel it in her eyes, but she doesn’t cry that I’ve seen.
  • Wear something to protect your eyes – Okay, so you might look a little, maybe a lot crazy but at least you won’t be crying.
  • When life makes you cut up an onion pull out a lemon – Using lemon juice to wipe down your knife as you chop your onion can help keep the tears away.
  • Keep your onions in the fridge – Did you know a cold onion is less potent.  It doesn’t take all the tears away, but it does make cutting onions easier on the eyes.  You can also pop that bad boy in the freezer for about 15 minutes before cutting an onion and it will do the same thing.  In my opinion, the freezer works better. (favorite)
  • Sharp knives – Using a sharp knife causes less damage to the onion.  This means fewer irritants are released and less tears! (favorite)
  • Candles are good for everything – I haven’t tried this, but another life hack that might help is lighting a candle.  I’ve heard that the flame will pull the gasses from the onion toward them and not them ending up irritating your eyes.
  • Water – BE CAREFUL PLEASE!  You can also avoid tears by cutting an onion under water, but be careful.  Whether it’s running water or water in a bowl it’s important to be extra careful and watch your fingers.

Of course using a sharp knife and putting the onion in the freezer are my favorite ways to avoid crying when cutting an onion, but I figured I would give you eight to choose from.  Some of them I have tried, others are life hacks my sister have shared because we don’t want anyone crying while cutting an onion anymore.
