Although most of us probably already have baking soda in our kitchens for cooking, baking soda has many other uses around the house. If you search online, these 19 are really just a small portion of the ones that exist. However, here are 19 practical uses for baking soda in the home.

Refrigerator

Because it helps absorb odors, most people are aware of this, and keeping a box of baking soda in the refrigerator can help keep odors away.

Stainless steel

I enjoy cleaning stainless steel surfaces, like the sink, with vinegar and baking soda because the results are amazing. Just fill your sink with baking soda, add in a little vinegar, and then use a sponge or similar material to clean the sink and surrounding area. 

Carpets & Rugs

To help get rid of carpet and rug odor, sprinkle some baking soda on your carpets and let it sit for at least ten minutes before vacuuming.  

Garbage disposal, drain deodorizer & maintenance

Pour baking soda down the drain, allow it to sit for a bit and add some vinegar Allow it to sit for a bit before running warm water down the drain. You can also use vinegar and baking soda to help clean your drains on a regular basis.

Deodorize your sponges

You know how bad the stench can be on our sponges. Good news! You may help prevent the stench by cleaning them with a solution of baking soda and warm water.  

Remove water stains from your window

You can remove those water stains from your window by using vinegar and baking soda.  

Remove soap scum

To help get rid of soap scum in your shower, sink, and other places, use baking soda. If you’d like, you can use vinegar in addition to baking soda, but you can also use warm water to create a paste and a sponge to get rid of soap residue.  

Sunglass scratch repair

To assist in repairing scratches on your clean sunglasses, mix baking soda, water, and a microfiber cloth.

Whiten your teeth

Did you know that you can remove stains from your teeth by brushing with baking soda? Yes, you should attempt whitening your teeth once a week using baking soda. Just be careful not to use too much, though, as this could harm the enamel on your teeth.

Deodorize your washing machine

Simply add baking soda to the washer and set it to cleaning mode if you find that your washing machine is starting to smell.  

Help neutralize pet odors

To help get rid of pet odors, sprinkle baking soda everywhere your pet spends time, let it sit for about thirty minutes, and then vacuum it up. 

Clean tile and grout

Need to clean your tile and grout? Baking soda and vinegar might be the solution; just be sure you can use vinegar on your grout because it does not react well with some natural stones, such as marble.

Combine baking soda and your cat litter to help deodorize your cats litter box.

Stop the sweet cravings

While doing a bit of research on uses for baking soda, I stumbled across Almanac.com and learned it can also be used to get rid of the sweet cravings.  I’m not sure whether this works, but I thought it was worth mentioning: if you have a sweet tooth, rinse your mouth with a mixture of baking soda and warm water, then spit it out. The craving should go away.  

Sour stomach

Have you ever had the sour stomach accompanied by the nasty tasting burbs? Combine baking soda and warm water and drink it.  You don’t have to drink a lot but it should make you burp and help relieve the sour stomach and burps.
