Halloween is almost here; we’re focused on keeping our children safe and enjoying the holiday. Our partnership with Banfield Pet Hospital® has helped me focus on the importance of my pets safety during the Halloween season and beyond as well as preventative steps I can take to keep them safe from things such as heartworms. I know a lot of you are pet lovers, so I wanted to share a few ways you can keep your pets safe on Halloween!
Five Tips To Keep Your Pets Save This Halloween
1.) Plan where you will keep them on Halloween – The kids will be out trick or treating so you might want to keep your pets inside or make sure they are in the back away from the commotion.
2.) Don’t leave costumes on them while you are away – Costumes are super cute, we dress our dogs, cats, and even our Flemish Giant bunnies up. This year one of my big old bunnies is going to be a taco, lol. It’s fun, they look cute and some even enjoy being dressed up. However, be sure to remove all pet costumes while you are away, too many things can happen and it’s just not worth the chance.
3.) Candy is NOT good for your animals – Be sure to keep all the Halloween candy away from your pets. I’m sure many of you already know this, but chocolate can be toxic to your pup, and all that candy is not good for them in any way shape or form and can be toxic. It’s simply not worth taking a chance, so keep the candy up, and if you have young children who might want to share with your pets only give them candy when you can watch.
4.) Make your pet feel special too – Be sure to make your pet feel special. Halloween can be a stressful evening for them. They might not understand why you put them in the backyard away from all the craziness Halloween can bring and we already know they are looking at the kids candy waiting for you to leave the room so they can have just one piece, lol. Why not make them their own candy/biscuit bucket and when you give the kids a piece of their candy grab your furry baby one too. There are plenty of healthy treats out there you can give your pets, don’t give them any candy!
5.) Get them a checkup – It’s so very important to take your pup to the vet, especially because we cannot see all harmful illnesses, such as heartworm disease which can actually spread from a mosquito that has been infected. I know it’s VERY scary, and it should be scary because it’s potentially fatal but on the other hand, it is VERY preventable. Since we can’t keep our dogs away from every infected mosquito, we MUST take them in yearly for heartworm tests.
We have four dogs, trips to the vet can get expensive, especially if you, take everyone to the vet at the same time but it’s a visit no dog should go without. To make things a little easier financially my husband and I get our dogs annual heartworm tests done at different times and keep them up to date on all shots, and protect them from heartworms with a heartworm preventative such as ProHeart6®.
ProHeart6® is an easy and convenient option when it comes to protecting your furry friends from heartworms. It’s a 6-month injectable that works to help us protect our dogs. I don’t know about, you but I love that we can get away from the whole monthly tablet thing because I always had the hardest time remembering when to give it to them if I forgot to put a reminder in my phone, which happened more than I like to admit. With four children I get excited when I learn about products like ProHeart6® because it not only protects my pups, it protect them for six months.
