Sites like Gate 1 Travel, Groupon, and Living Social offer discounted vacation packages for domestic travel as well as destinations worldwide.

If you belong to Costco, BJ’s or Sam’s Club, you’ll want to search their sites for great prices on vacations packages as well.

2. Get the Latest Airfare Apps

Download airfare apps from the app store. You have the option to be alerted when there are good deals on airfare to certain destinations that you choose.

If you start watching early, you’ll learn which deals are good and which ones can be better.

Hopper, for example, predicts the costs of airfare and advises you to go ahead and purchase or wait for a better deal.

3. Travel Off-Season

If your children are not in one of the rare schools that have year-round schooling, you are likely on the same schedule as most of America.

So…finding deals at peak times takes some effort. Consider taking your kids out of school, prearranging this with their teachers, and travel at an off time.

Everything from hotels to rental cars to tours will be less expensive.

4. Book Mid-Week Flights

Flying on a Tuesday or Wednesday is always cheaper than trying to fly on a weekend.

If you have some flexibility with your plans, you can score some inexpensive mid-week flights and cut a chunk of money off your bottom line.

5. Think Outside the Box

Your family vacation does not have to include a 5-star hotel. You will not spend much time at the hotel anyway.

Consider a less expensive hotel that includes a decent breakfast. That will erase one meal expense per day.

Look into home rentals or rooms with kitchenettes to prepare a few meals in the room or suite.

If you’re really adventurous, plan a family camping trip by checking out some of the wonderous campsites around the country.
