Things To Consider When Choosing a Kids Bike

by Jenn Brockman

Do you remember learning to ride a bike when you were little? WOW, and the feeling you felt when you finally took off those training wheels and found out nobody was holding you up? I do, gosh I was so proud of myself, and I still remember how proud my parents. It’s a feeling I’ll never forget and a feeling I want to make sure my kids get to experience.

choosing a kids bikeMattie has been riding a bike for a while now, and we have taken her training wheels off, but she realized what it was going to be like and immediately asked dad to put them back on. Of course, dad put them back on. We want it to be a good experience for them, not one that traumatizes them for years to come.

We recently got a new Schwinn Jamboree Girls 16” Bike from Toys R Us for Mattie, and she is already talking bout taking the training wheels off because she likes this bike so much better. She tells me that it’s much easier to ride and that we should just donate her old one after we get a new seat for it, lol. Kids are funny, but it made me realize how important a comfortable bike is for a child’s confidence.

Things To Consider When Choosing a Kids Bike

  • Get them a helmet – First things first, before buying a bike be sure to grab your child a helmet that fits. Schwinn made it fun for Mattie because her helmet and bike are the same color. It’s helped her enjoy sporting a helmet more that’s for sure. Make sure your child’s helmet fits properly.
  • Weight matters – If your child is just learning how to ride or is a newer rider a lightweight bike will make a huge difference in their ability to control the bike while they are riding or to push their bike.
  • Get a bike that fits – Be sure and find out which size of the bike is right for your kids. The size of the bike should be based on their size, and you can see whether or not the bike fits properly by having them get on the bike.
  • Get a bike that grows with them a bit – I’m sure you already know that kids grow fast which is why you’ll want a bike they can use for a bit. The Schwinn Jamboree SmartStart bike we recently got for my daughter is awesome for this. When the seat is raised to fit your growing child, the distance between the seat and the handlebars increases as well. This increases the reach range for your child and will allow the bike to grow with them, which means it should work for them longer.
  • Comfort – to be confident they need to be comfortable on their bike. If they ride wobbling everywhere, they’re never going to feel confident enough to take those training wheels off. Choose a bike that is comfortable for them and build around the proportions of a child. It will not only make for a more comfortable ride but a more confident rider which means more confident parents.
  • Looks matter when you are a child – You don’t have to go all crazy but keep in mind looks do matter when you are young. I know Mattie wouldn’t be nearly as happy riding a boys bike as she is cruising around her purple Schwinn Jamboree Girls Bike. When they are happy and like their bike not only will they spend more time riding but they will feel better which just makes them a more confident rider.

The Schwinn Jamboree Girls’ Bike has been perfect for Mattie. I can defiantly see a difference in her when she rides her new bike. She is much more confident and willing to try new things.

Mattie loves her bike, and I’d have to agree it’s pretty cool. One of my favorite things about the bike is the super cute flower pedals that are made to match the width of a child’s hips so they can maintain better balance. Well, that and the fact that this bike, like all Schwinn bikes, is backed by a limited lifetime manufacturer warranty for as long as you own the bike.

mattie loves her new bikeMattie loves the way her bike looks, from the super cute streamers to the excellent seat. Oh, and let’s not forget her new favorite color but the bike is accented with coordinating fenders, streams, and the awesome handlebar basket that allows matter to bring along stuffed friends, oranges, and pretty rocks she sees along the way. She loves the darn basket and always have something crazy in there lol.

kids on bikeThe Schwinn Jamboree Girls 16” Bike is a single speed bike with a coaster brake so kids can stop nice and easy to ensure they are comfortable riding. She is also super excited about the seat, not just because she has a big seat like her sister but because it’s more comfortable and easier for her to ride. I’ve noticed she does a lot less wobbling back and forth between training wheels and starts out easier thanks to the SmartStart that’s built around the proportions of a child for easy on and off which makes everything easier.

It is so important in choosing a bike and it does seem a portion of parents don’t think about that when wanting their kids to take off those training wheels. I went through it with both of my kids. I picked a bike for my oldest and she just wasn’t happy with it and didn’t want to learn. So, we took her to pick one and what do you know, she learned the very next day. With my youngest, she picked her first bike. Easy peasy!
