Tips & Tricks To Keep Kids Brushing Their Teeth

by Jenn

We all know how important brushing your teeth, but it’s not easy to explain the importance to young children.  There are plenty of different tips and trick to keep kids brushing their teeth, but all children are different and will have different things motivate them to brush their teeth.

Our youngest loves to brush her teeth and she probably over brushes if anything, lol.  I crossing my fingers she continues to enjoy brushing.  However, her older sister doesn’t seem to share her younger sister’s love for brushing.  She’ll do it, but we have to watch her carefully to make sure she gets her teeth brushed correctly.

Since brushing isn’t something, we can let her slack on we’ve tried several different things to make it more fun.  Here are a few tips and trick to keep kids brushing their teeth:

  • Songs – We made up a song just for brushing.  I don’t remember what we named it, I think it’s the “MMMM Song” because we try to sing while brushing all it sounds like MMM.  Regardless it’s fun, and it’s helped her brush.
  • Toothbrush – The kids love picking their own toothbrush.  We’ve had all sorts of different character toothbrushes, but the interactive brushing seem to be Vayda’s favorite.  I suggest taking your child to pick their toothbrush and trying different types of toothbrushes until you find one they like.  The right toothbrush makes a big difference.
  • Bubbles – Remember brushing can make bubbles, and that’s cool, especially for young kids.  Why not challenge your child to a bubble contest?
  • Brushing together – Brushing is more fun together.  Joining my kids helps them not only have more fun, but see that mom and dad practice good brushing habits too.
  • Ask them – Remember to ask your kids why brushing is so important to make sure they are listening and understand what you have been telling them.
  • My Bright Smile – Have you downloaded My Bright Smile or brushing fun?  It’s an interactive app that helps children build healthy oral habits free.

Half a billion kids around the world have benefitted from the Colgate Bright Smiles, Bright Futures® oral health education program. Now, it’s offering a free, educational app: “My Bright Smile.” Included are five games, including “Visit the Dentist,” “Swipe the Sweets” and “Brush the Teeth.” There’s even a two-minute song that will help keep your kids brushing until every tooth is clean.

Brushing TimerMy girls have enjoyed playing the fun games included on the My Bright Smiles app.  The two-minute song helps make brushing for the entire two minutes more fun and helps Mattie know when two minutes is up.  Since I brush with my kids, I also get to jam out while brushing, which I admit helps pass the time and make things more fun.   Since we have the new fun song to jam to while we brush, we’ve added a few impressive dance moves to our brushing, which has helped make things more fun too.

SwipeTheSweetsIf you’re looking for ways to encourage, motivate and show your kids brushing is fun be sure to download My Bright Smiles for FREE in Google Play for your Android device and the Apple App Store for your iOS device

If you use mouthwash don’t use it directly after brushing as you rinse away the fluoride from your toothpaste.

Taking time to sit down with my kids to ask them why oral hygiene is important is a very good tip. That gives us the opportunity to instill proper teeth cleaning habits that they need to learn as children. Some of the most important lessons that children need to learn should be taught to them as a family. Bringing the whole family together to discuss oral health can be a very good way to not only explain to them why brushing and flossing help maintain oral health, but also make sure that they understand these lessons by having them talk it out with you to make sure that they understand what they’ve been taught.
