Summer Reading Challenge Innovation Book Packet Giveaway

WOW, it’s hard to believe summer is almost over.  Bud, Vayda, and Mattie will be heading back to school on the 11th, which means they need to get into gear to accomplish their summer reading goals for Scholastic.  They were doing GREAT, but like all of us they needed a little vacation.  They just got back from their weeklong vacation with my parents.

They got back this morning, and we just finished their daily reading before bed, lol.  No slack when it comes to summer reading in this house.  I want my kids to be as prepared for the upcoming school year as possible.

Vayda told me something tonight that opened my eyes to the importance of daily reading regardless of what we have going on.  After we were done reading out of the blue Vayda told me, “Mom, you’re right.  It is important for us to read during the summer.”  Of course, I asked for more details and learned that Vayda noticed a difference when she was reading tonight.  She said she could tell she hadn’t read while she was at grandmas; things didn’t come as easy to her, and she didn’t feel like it was as easy to follow along.  I’m glad she noticed, and it was a huge eye opener for me as well.  It helped me realize just how important summer reading is, I can’t imagine how she would feel going back to school had she not been reading during the summer.

The kids were excited to continue the Scholastic Summer Reading Challenge with Energizer Bunny, I mean he does make things more fun, even from an adults perspective lol.  This year the Scholastic Summer Reading Challenge theme is “Power Up & Read” powered by Energizer®.

The good news is, it’s not too late to get your kids to start reading and make things more fun by setting a goal and joining the Scholastic Summer Reading Challenge, it’s FREE!  We’ve had a lot of fun reading together, and the kids LOVE playing on the Scholastic website.  Vayda loves unlocking short stories by some of the bestselling children’s authors.  Mattie loves it too, but she’s just starting with her reading, so her older sister or I read her the short stories.

Now in its 9th year, the Scholastic Summer Reading Challenge is a free online reading program dedicated to stopping the “summer slide” by encouraging kids to keep reading read throughout the summer months when school is out. It’s a great program for kids to be part of because it not only encourages them to read but helps make things fun, and they have a goal to work toward, a rather significant goal – breaking the current summer reading world record, which was set by Scholastic Summer Reading Challenge participants last year.

I think it is a good challenge because it gets kids to read.
